Azad M Madni
Azad M Madni is a systems engineer whose research applies augmented intelligence and machine learning to complex systems. Raised in Mumbai, he studied engineering at UCLA, worked on defense systems at Parsons, and developed model-based tests for NASA’s Space Shuttle navigation system at Rockwell. He led artificial intelligence and simulation work at Perceptronics, helped found Intelligent Systems Technology, and joined USC in 2009 to lead its Systems Architecting and Engineering Program. At USC, his research connects augmented intelligence, machine learning, and human-machine teaming with aerospace and autonomous systems; his 2018 book and 2019 work explore transdisciplinary engineering and digital twins. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2021, received the NAE Gordon Prize and IEEE Simon Ramo Medal in 2023, won the John Fritz Medal in 2026, and as of October 2026 is a USC University Professor and executive director of the program.
Timeline
-
1968
UCLA and Parsons
Raised in Mumbai, he completes an engineering B.S. at UCLA in 1968 and joins Parsons as a systems engineer working on defense programs.
-
1971–1978
Rockwell and an AI doctorate
At UCLA, he earns an M.S. in engineering in 1971 and a Ph.D. in engineering systems in 1978, with minors in computer methodology and AI. During doctoral study at Rockwell’s space division, he develops model-based tests for NASA’s Space Shuttle navigation system.
-
1978–1994
AI and simulation at Perceptronics
In 1978, he joins Perceptronics to lead artificial intelligence and software research, then becomes executive vice president and CTO. In 1980, he begins work on distributed simulation technology that lets soldiers practise missions in safe virtual environments.
-
1994–2009
Founding Intelligent Systems Technology
In 1994, he leaves Perceptronics to help found Intelligent Systems Technology, a research and development company focused on modeling and simulation. Through 2009, he serves as its CEO and CTO and develops model-based approaches for complex systems.
-
Since 2009
Leading systems engineering at USC
In 2009, he joins USC to lead its Systems Architecting and Engineering Program. He directs the Distributed Autonomy and Intelligent Systems Laboratory, where his research explores augmented intelligence, machine learning, and human-machine teaming for complex aerospace and autonomous systems.
-
2018–2019
A book on systems engineering
His 2018 book, Transdisciplinary Systems Engineering, presents disciplinary convergence as a way to address complex sociotechnical systems problems. In 2019, he and co-authors publish work on digital twin technology in model-based systems engineering.
-
2021–2023
The Gordon and Simon Ramo awards
He is elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2021. In 2023, he receives the NAE Bernard M. Gordon Prize for engineering education and the IEEE Simon Ramo Medal for systems engineering and systems science.
-
As of October 2026
University Professor at USC
As of October 2026, he is USC’s University Professor, Northrop Grumman Foundation Fred O’Green Chair in Engineering, and executive director of the Systems Architecting and Engineering Program. In October 2026, he receives the John Fritz Medal for advances in transdisciplinary systems engineering.
