Andrea Jenney
Andrea Jenney is a climate scientist whose research connects machine learning with climate emulation and tropical convection. She earned degrees at the University of Miami and Colorado State, presented an invited talk on tropical ascent, and coauthored a 2021 study of Madden–Julian Oscillation teleconnections. She coauthored ClimSim, a global dataset of 5.7 billion input-output pairs for hybrid physics and machine-learning climate research; its paper won a 2023 NeurIPS Outstanding Paper award. In 2025, she received the CFMIP Early Career Scientist Award for a presentation on the ITCZ's negative cloud radiative effect and small anvil cloud fraction. Since 2022, she is an assistant professor at Oregon State and leads balloon soundings that have informed global weather forecasts.

Timeline
-
2015–2020
Degrees in atmospheric science
She earns a B.S. at the University of Miami in 2015, an M.S. at Colorado State in 2017, and a Ph.D. in atmospheric science at Colorado State in 2020.
-
March 2020
A NOAA postdoctoral fellowship
In March 2020, she is selected for a NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship while finishing her atmospheric-science Ph.D. at Colorado State. She plans to join UC Irvine's Mike Pritchard for high-resolution simulations of small-scale atmospheric temperature features and convection, with the goal of improving weather and climate simulations.
-
December 2020
An invited AGU presentation
At AGU in December 2020, she presents an invited talk titled “Understanding the Response of Tropical Ascent to Warming Using an Energy Balance Framework.”
-
2021
MJO teleconnections and peer review
In 2021, she coauthors “Drivers of uncertainty in future projections of Madden–Julian Oscillation teleconnections.” The study examines why climate models differ on how tropical storm activity will affect weather over the North Pacific and North America; she submits the authors' response to peer review in May 2021.
-
2023
ClimSim earns a NeurIPS award
She coauthors ClimSim, a global dataset of 5.7 billion multivariate input-output pairs for hybrid physics and machine-learning climate research. NeurIPS names the paper an Outstanding Paper in 2023.
-
2025
A CFMIP early-career award
She receives the 2025 CFMIP Early Career Scientist Award for her presentation on factors controlling the ITCZ's negative cloud radiative effect and small anvil cloud fraction.
-
Since 2022
Assistant professor at Oregon State
She joins Oregon State as an assistant professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences in 2022 and studies tropical convection and clouds. In February 2026, she leads OSU's work in the Coordinated University Sounding Program for Atmospheric River Reconnaissance. Radiosondes on the balloons measure air pressure, temperature and humidity and record wind speed from balloon position; Jenney says their data have informed global weather forecasts.
