Zen Chen

Also known as 陳稔

Zen Chen is a computer-vision researcher in Taiwan whose papers since 1975 cover pattern classification, 3-D shape recovery from images and mobile-phone logo recognition. He earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Purdue University and taught in the Department of Computer Science at National Chiao-Tung University in Hsinchu. In 1991 he and Shinn-Ying Ho published a Pattern Recognition paper on 3-D aircraft recognition with fast library search, and in 1999 he and Jen-Bin Huang published a circle pose method in IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2006 for contributions to computer vision and related applications, and for service to IAPR. He is a retired professor of computer science at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.

  1. 1975–1977

    Early pattern classification papers

    A Purdue University Ph.D. in electrical engineering, he publishes "On the connectivity of clusters" in Information Sciences in 1975 and "Nonparametric Bayes Risk Estimation for Pattern Classification" in IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics in 1977, both with King-Sun Fu.

  2. 1985–1991

    Human posture and aircraft recognition

    In 1985, he and Hsi-Jian Lee publish "Determination of 3D human body postures from a single view" in Computer Vision, Graphics, and Image Processing. In 1991, he and Shinn-Ying Ho publish "Computer vision for robust 3D aircraft recognition with fast library search" in Pattern Recognition.

  3. 1993–1999

    Structured light and pose estimation

    In 1993, he, Shinn-Ying Ho and Din-Chang Tseng publish a polyhedral face reconstruction method using structured light from a single image in IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics. In 1994, he, Tsorng-Lin Chia and Shinn-Ying Ho publish a method for measuring the 3-D location and shape parameters of cylinders, and in 1999 he and Jen-Bin Huang publish a circle pose method, both in IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation.

  4. 2003–2006

    Silhouette-based 3-D reconstruction

    In 2003, he, Yen-Hsiang Fang and Hong-Long Chou publish "3D shape recovery of complex objects from multiple silhouette images" in Pattern Recognition Letters. In 2004, he and Chou publish a 3-D planar object reconstruction method for uncalibrated images in the same journal, and in 2006 a fast octree construction method with an error-bound subdivision scheme in the Journal of Information Science and Engineering.

  5. 2005

    Cellular neural networks workshop

    He is among the authors of the preface to the proceedings of the 9th IEEE International Workshop on Cellular Neural Networks and their Applications, held in Hsinchu, Taiwan, in May 2005.

  6. 2006

    An IAPR Fellowship

    The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 2006 for contributions to computer vision and related applications, and for service to IAPR.

  7. 2010–2015

    Descriptors and dense reconstruction

    In 2010, he and Shu-Kuo Sun publish "A Zernike Moment Phase-Based Descriptor for Local Image Representation and Matching" in IEEE Transactions on Image Processing. In 2011, the two publish a robust logo recognition method for mobile phone applications, and in 2015 he, Wen-Chao Chen and Ping-Yi Sung publish a stochastic-optimization method for 3-D dense reconstruction from multiple views.

    Retired professor at NYCU

    He is a retired professor in the Department of Computer Science at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. His research areas as a professor at National Chiao-Tung University in Hsinchu include 3DTV and 2D to 3D movie conversion, mobile phone augmented reality, content-based image and video retrieval, and video surveillance.
