Vojtěch Bareš
Vojtěch Bareš is a researcher in urban hydrology whose work uses commercial microwave links to monitor rain for urban drainage. A former Czech whitewater slalom representative, he designed a standing wave in Prague and teaches hydraulics and urban hydrology at CTU. A 2014 paper he coauthored received the Poul Harremoës Award, and his 2022 OpenSense research examined rainfall fields and radar comparisons. In 2025, he shared the Best Paper Award for Young Researchers and coauthored an EGU abstract on a Random Forest model for urban runoff prediction. As of October 2026, he works in CTU’s Department of Hydraulics and Hydrology, where he studies rainfall monitoring and urban drainage.
Timeline
-
2014
A Poul Harremoës Award
With Martin Fencl, Jörg Rieckermann, Petr Sýkora and David Stránský, he coauthors a paper on using commercial microwave links as rainfall sensors. The paper receives the 2014 Poul Harremoës Award.
-
October 2021
A standing wave in Prague
In October 2021, he designs the Vlny Štvanice standing wave in Prague after measuring channel levels and making a 1:10 hydraulic model with students. At CTU, he teaches hydraulics and urban hydrology, leads physical and numerical hydraulic modeling projects, and is a former Czech whitewater slalom representative.
-
2022–2023
OpenSense rainfall research
In 2022, he coauthors an OpenSense presentation on transboundary rainfall fields generated from two independent commercial microwave-link networks and another comparing link rainfall retrieval with adjusted radar. In 2023, he coauthors a study with Anna Špačková and Martin Fencl that evaluates error components in rainfall retrieval from collocated commercial microwave links.
-
2025
An EGU opening talk
In 2025, he gives the invited opening talk for EGU’s rainfall and urban hydrology session in Vienna. He discusses progress in opportunistic rainfall sensing and OpenSense’s coordination of international research.
-
September 2025
Modelling a Prague slalom course
In September 2025, he leads CTU’s hydraulic research for a planned 500-metre slalom course at Prague’s Water Sports Park. The team uses a 35-metre physical model to simulate flows and optimize the course’s hydraulics, including waves and recirculating currents.
-
2025
Machine learning for urban runoff
In September 2025, Ying Song, Martin Fencl and Vojtěch Bareš receive the Best Paper Award for Young Researchers at the 13th Urban Drainage Modelling Conference. In an EGU abstract, Song and Bareš describe a Random Forest model that estimates two-minute urban runoff from raw commercial microwave-link attenuation data.
-
June 2026
A habilitation dissertation
For June 2026, CTU schedules his habilitation lecture on quantitative rainfall estimation from commercial microwave links and the application of these estimates to urban catchment runoff prediction.
-
As of October 2026
Urban hydrology at CTU
He works in CTU’s Department of Hydraulics and Hydrology, where his research focuses on rainfall monitoring for urban hydrology and urban drainage. In 2026, he coauthors a Journal of Hydrology article on data-driven rainfall-runoff modeling with microwave-link attenuation.
