Timo Ahonen
Timo Ahonen is a computer vision researcher and engineer known for a face-recognition method built on Local Binary Pattern histograms. He coauthored "Face Recognition with Local Binary Patterns" with Abdenour Hadid and Matti Pietikäinen at ECCV in 2004, and in 2006 the three published a paper on face description with local binary patterns in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. After a PhD at the University of Oulu in 2009, he coauthored the 2011 Springer book Computer Vision Using Local Binary Patterns and presented the FCam course at SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 with Kari Pulli and Alejandro Troccoli. The ECCV paper received the Koenderink Prize, a test-of-time award, in 2014. Today he is a Software Engineering Manager at Meta, where he works on augmented reality products after earlier roles at Nokia's R&D unit in Silicon Valley.
Timeline
-
2004
Face recognition with Local Binary Patterns
In 2004, he coauthors "Face Recognition with Local Binary Patterns" with Abdenour Hadid and Matti Pietikäinen at ECCV. The method divides the face area into small regions, extracts Local Binary Pattern histograms from each, and joins them into one feature histogram; on FERET tests it outperforms PCA, the Bayesian Intra/extrapersonal Classifier and Elastic Bunch Graph Matching.
-
2006
A paper in IEEE TPAMI
In 2006, Ahonen, Hadid and Pietikäinen publish "Face description with local binary patterns: Application to face recognition" in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence.
-
2008
A framework for texture descriptors
In 2008, he and Matti Pietikäinen publish "A Framework for Analyzing Texture Descriptors," which unifies descriptors such as Local Binary Patterns and Maximum Response 8. Its filter-based approach shows that LBP can be seen as a special filter-based texture operator.
-
2009
A PhD at Oulu
He receives his PhD degree from the University of Oulu in Finland in 2009.
-
2011
A book on Local Binary Patterns
In 2011, Springer publishes Computer Vision Using Local Binary Patterns, which he coauthors with Matti Pietikäinen, Abdenour Hadid and Guoying Zhao as volume 40 of the Computational Imaging and Vision series. Its parts cover LBP operators, analysis of still images, motion analysis and face analysis.
-
2011
The FCam course at SIGGRAPH Asia
At SIGGRAPH Asia 2011, he presents the course "FCam: an architecture and API for computational cameras" with Kari Pulli and Alejandro Troccoli. FCam is an open-source API for precise control of camera systems, implemented for the Nokia N900.
-
2014
The Koenderink Prize
In 2014, he receives the Jan Koenderink Prize for "Face Recognition with Local Binary Patterns," his 2004 ECCV paper with Hadid and Pietikäinen. The prize recognizes "fundamental contributions in computer vision that stood the test of time."
-
As of October 2026
Software engineering manager at Meta
He is a Software Engineering Manager at Meta, working in computer vision, computational photography and data science, and his Meta work includes augmented reality products. Before Meta, he works in Nokia's R&D unit in Silicon Valley in research scientist and R&D leader roles in imaging, computer vision and data science.
