Terry Boult

Also known as T. Boult, Terrance E. Boult, Terrance Boult

Terry Boult is a computer vision researcher whose OpenMax work helps deep networks reject images from unknown classes. He earned degrees at Columbia, served on its computer science faculty, founded Lehigh's CSE department and joined UCCS in 2003. At UCCS, his research focused on biometric security, statistical learning and privacy; he founded Securics in 2004 and launched the Bachelor of Innovation in 2007. He co-founded the Computer Vision Foundation, shared the 2014 PAMI Mark Everingham Prize with Ginger Boult, and became an IEEE Fellow in 2017. He is affiliated with UCCS and serves as program committee chair for the Firmware Testing and Analysis track at SPLASH/ISSTA in 2026.

Timeline

  1. 1983–1994

    Columbia degrees and faculty

He earns a BS in applied mathematics in 1983, an MS in computer science in 1984 and a PhD in computer science in 1986 at Columbia University. He serves on Columbia's computer science faculty from 1986 to 1994 and is an associate professor from 1992 to 1994.

  2. 1994–2003

    Founding Lehigh's CSE department

He moves to Lehigh in 1994 as an endowed professor and founding chairman of its Computer Science and Engineering department. He joins UCCS in 2003.

  3. 2003

    An endowed chair at UCCS

He joins UCCS as the El Pomar Endowed Chair of Innovation and Security in 2003. His research focuses on biometric security, statistical learning and privacy.

  4. 2004–2007

Securics and the Bachelor of Innovation

He founds Securics in 2004 to commercialize privacy-preserving biometric technologies. In 2007, he launches UCCS's Bachelor of Innovation program, built around an innovation core and multidisciplinary study.

  5. 2011–2014

    Computer Vision Foundation and prize

He co-founds the Computer Vision Foundation in 2011. In 2014, he and Ginger Boult share the PAMI Mark Everingham Prize for long-term service managing computer vision conferences and workshops.

  6. 2016

    OpenMax for open-set recognition

In 2016, he coauthors the CVPR paper Towards Open Set Deep Networks with Abhijit Bendale. Their OpenMax layer estimates whether an input belongs to an unknown class and helps deep networks reject unfamiliar images.

  7. 2017

    An IEEE Fellowship

He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2017.

  8. As of October 2026

    UCCS affiliation and program chair
