Ted Coombs

Ted Coombs is a technology author and AI lab leader whose work connects cybersecurity with machine cognition. He skated across the United States and back in 1979, and his OpenRecordBook.com project grew from the Guinness record. He discussed human-like intelligence on an OpenCog mailing list in 2008, described his computer-forensics work in 2011, and later wrote books on AI, cloud and cybersecurity. As of October 2026, he is Cogniveo's Chief Science Officer and directs its machine cognitive intelligence laboratory in Utrecht.

  1. 1979

    A cross-country skating record

    In 1979, he skates across the United States and back, earning inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records. His OpenRecordBook.com project grows from that experience.

  2. February 2008

    An OpenCog AGI discussion

    In February 2008, he asks what responsibilities a human-like intelligence should have and who would pay for its power and maintenance. He also considers the risk that it could grow hostile.

  3. 2011

    Computer forensics

    In 2011, he describes applying his computer-science training to computer forensics later in his career. He says he finds the work fascinating despite its differences from television portrayals.

  4. March 2019

    AI for cybersecurity

    By March 2019, his 2018 Artificial Intelligence & Cybersecurity for Dummies covers machine learning and deep learning for security. The examples include DGA domains, fileless malware, and IoT protection.

  5. May 2022

    A cloud security guide

    In May 2022, he publishes Cloud Security For Dummies, a 384-page book with a chapter on AIOps in cloud security.

  6. January 2023

    A cybersecurity handbook

    In January 2023, he coauthors Cybersecurity All-in-One For Dummies with Joseph Steinberg, Kevin Beaver, and Ira Winkler. The 720-page book spans personal, business, and cloud security, as well as testing and security awareness.

    Chief science officer at Cogniveo

    He is Cogniveo's Chief Science Officer and directs its machine cognitive intelligence laboratory in Utrecht, Netherlands.
