Tamara Kneese
Tamara Kneese is a researcher who studies how AI and digital infrastructure affect labor, climate, and communities around data centers. She earned degrees at Kenyon College, the University of Chicago, and NYU, then worked at the University of San Francisco and Intel. In 2023, she led research for the Green Software Foundation’s first State of Green Software report, joined Data & Society’s AIMLab, and published Death Glitch. With Meg Young, she published a 2024 article on generative AI’s carbon and water costs; in 2025, she led Data & Society’s Climate, Technology, and Justice program and coauthored Notes Toward a Digital Workers’ Inquiry. As of October 2026, she is a Senior Research Scientist (Qualitative) at Partnership on AI and a Practitioner Fellow at the University of Virginia’s Environmental Institute, where she works on community engagement around data center impacts.

-
August 2024
Carbon emissions in generative AI
With Meg Young, she publishes “Carbon Emissions in the Tailpipe of Generative AI” in Harvard Data Science Review in August 2024. The article reviews evidence on large language models’ carbon and water costs and argues that machine-learning research should account for resource costs across the lifecycle and supply chain.

January 2025
Data & Society’s climate program
In January 2025, Data & Society launches its Climate, Technology, and Justice program with Kneese as its lead, and Meg Young succeeds her as AIMLab project director.
