Stanislav Nikolov

Also known as Stan

Stanislav Nikolov is an AI researcher whose work spans Twitter trend forecasting, medical imaging, protein structure prediction and mathematical research. Born in Bulgaria in 1989, he grew up in Hisar, moved to New York City at eight, attended Stuyvesant and studied electrical engineering, computer science and mathematics at MIT; there, he and Devavrat Shah developed a Twitter trends algorithm in 2012. He joined DeepMind as a research engineer in 2016, coauthored 2018 retinal diagnosis research, and contributed to AlphaFold2’s 2020 result; in 2021, he was among the equally contributing authors of Nature’s AlphaFold paper and coauthored a human-proteome study. He is based in London and works on AI for mathematics; in 2025, he coauthored a paper reporting the first systematic discovery of new families of unstable singularities in fluid equations.

Timeline

  1. 1989

    From Bulgaria to Stuyvesant

Born in Bulgaria in 1989, he grows up in Hisar until his family moves to New York City when he is eight. At Stuyvesant High School, he explores mathematics, physics and computer science.

  2. By 2012

    Twitter trends at MIT

He studies electrical engineering, computer science and mathematics at MIT. In 2012, he and associate professor Devavrat Shah develop an algorithm that predicts trending topics with 95 percent accuracy an average of an hour and a half before Twitter’s algorithm lists them.

  3. 2013

    Forecasting Twitter trends

With George H. Chen and Devavrat Shah, he coauthors a NIPS paper on a latent source model for time-series classification. The paper lists Twitter as his affiliation and reports that the method detects trending topics ahead of Twitter 79 percent of the time.

  4. 2016

    Research engineer at DeepMind

He joins DeepMind as a research engineer in 2016 and initially builds computer vision systems for medical diagnosis and treatment.

  5. 2018

    Retinal disease referral study

In 2018, he coauthors a Nature Medicine paper whose deep-learning system makes referral recommendations at or above expert performance for sight-threatening retinal diseases.

  6. 2020–2021

    AlphaFold’s protein predictions

On the AlphaFold2 team, he helps show in 2020 that the system predicts protein structures with experimental-level accuracy. In 2021, Nature publishes “Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold,” with Nikolov among its equally contributing authors.

  7. July 2021

    AlphaFold and the human proteome

In July 2021, he is among the authors of a Nature study that applies AlphaFold to 98.5 percent of human proteins. Its dataset gives confident predictions for 58 percent of residues.

  8. As of October 2026

    AI for mathematics in London

He is based in London and works on applying AI to mathematics. In September 2025, he coauthors “Discovery of Unstable Singularities,” which reports the first systematic discovery of new families of unstable singularities in fluid equations.
