Ryan Tibshirani

Also known as Ryan J. Tibshirani

Ryan Tibshirani is a UC Berkeley statistician whose work includes trend filtering and prediction intervals for machine learning. He earned mathematics and statistics degrees at Stanford, then joined Carnegie Mellon’s Statistics faculty in 2011 and its Machine Learning faculty in 2013. With Roni Rosenfeld, he co-founded Delphi in 2012 to develop epidemic forecasting and co-directed the group during its COVIDcast work in 2020. He coauthored the 2019 jackknife+ paper and received the 2022 Mortimer Spiegelman Award and the 2023 COPSS Presidents’ Award. He is CDSS Chancellor’s Professor at UC Berkeley, where he moved in July 2022 and became chair of the Department of Statistics in July 2025.

Timeline

  1. 2007–2011

    Mathematics and statistics at Stanford

He earns a BS in Mathematics at Stanford University in 2007 and a PhD in Statistics there in 2011, with Jonathan Taylor as his thesis advisor.

  2. 2011–2013

    Joining Carnegie Mellon

In 2011, he joins the Statistics faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. He joins its Machine Learning faculty in 2013.

  3. 2012

    Co-founding the Delphi group

With Roni Rosenfeld, he co-founds the Delphi research group at Carnegie Mellon in 2012 to develop epidemic forecasting. The group develops models to track current outbreaks and predict their course, with an initial focus on seasonal influenza in the United States.

  4. 2014

    Theory for trend filtering

In 2014, he publishes “Adaptive piecewise polynomial estimation via trend filtering” in the Annals of Statistics. The paper studies a regression method that fits piecewise polynomials with adaptively chosen knot points and proves a minimax convergence rate under a bounded-variation condition.

  5. 2019

    Prediction intervals with jackknife+

With Rina Foygel Barber, Emmanuel Candès, and Aaditya Ramdas, he coauthors “Predictive inference with the jackknife+” in 2019. The method constructs prediction intervals with coverage guarantees for exchangeable data and learning algorithms that treat training observations symmetrically.

  6. 2020

    COVIDcast tracks the pandemic

In 2020, he co-directs Delphi with Roni Rosenfeld as the group develops COVIDcast indicators of COVID-19 activity. COVIDcast combines medical claims from Change Healthcare with survey, testing, and mobility data to give researchers detailed information about local pandemic conditions.

  7. July 2022

    Moving to UC Berkeley

He moves to UC Berkeley in July 2022.

  8. 2022

    The Mortimer Spiegelman Award

In 2022, he receives the Mortimer Spiegelman Award from the American Public Health Association’s Applied Public Health Statistics Section. The award recognizes contributions to health statistics, especially public health statistics.

  9. 2023

    The COPSS Presidents’ Award

He receives the 2023 COPSS Presidents’ Award for contributions that include nonparametric estimation, distribution-free inference, trend filtering, and epidemic tracking and forecasting. The award also recognizes his role in co-leading Delphi during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  10. Since July 2025

    Chair of Berkeley Statistics

In July 2025, he becomes chair of UC Berkeley’s Department of Statistics. As of October 2026, he is CDSS Chancellor’s Professor and department chair, with research interests that include machine learning, high-dimensional statistics, distribution-free inference, and epidemic forecasting.
