Ryan S. Baker

Also known as Ryan Baker, Ryan Shaun Baker, Ryan S.J.d. Baker

Ryan Baker uses educational data and AI to study how students learn from software. By 2009, he had earned degrees at Brown and Carnegie Mellon, completed research fellowships, directed the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center DataShop, and joined WPI as an assistant professor. He served as founding president of the International Educational Data Mining Society in 2011, studied online tutoring at Teachers College, Columbia, and helped develop BROMP, a protocol for observing student affect and behavior. His 2025 study tested GPT-4 for qualitative coding across tutoring, game-based learning, and programming data. As of October 2026, he is Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Education at Adelaide University, directs Penn’s Center for Learning Analytics, and co-directs JeepyTA, a virtual teaching assistant.

Timeline

  1. By 2009

Degrees at Brown and Carnegie Mellon

By 2009, he holds a ScB in computer science from Brown University and an MS and a PhD in human-computer interaction from Carnegie Mellon University.

  2. By 2009

    Directing the DataShop

Before he joins WPI in 2009, he completes fellowships at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Nottingham and serves as technical director of the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center DataShop.

  3. 2009

    Joining WPI

In 2009, he joins WPI as assistant professor of social science and policy studies and studies how students interact with educational software. His research leads to software that adapts to individual differences.

  4. 2011

    Founding the EDM society

The International Educational Data Mining Society forms in July 2011, and he serves as its founding president.

  5. 2014

    Analyzing online tutoring

In 2014, he is Associate Professor of Cognitive Studies at Teachers College, Columbia, where he uses computer methods to analyze learner behavior in intelligent tutoring systems and other online environments.

  6. 2015

    BROMP and student observation

In 2015, he coauthors the BROMP 2.0 technical and training manual with Jaclyn Ocumpaugh and Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo. Together, Baker and Rodrigo develop BROMP as a field-observation protocol for recording student affect and behavior.

  7. 2025

    GPT-4 for qualitative coding

In 2025, he and his colleagues test GPT-4 for qualitative coding across tutoring transcripts, game-based learning observations, and debugging behaviors in an introductory programming course.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Adelaide University

As of October 2026, he is Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Education at Adelaide University and directs the Penn Center for Learning Analytics. He also co-directs JeepyTA, a virtual teaching assistant for course discussions.
