Romina Torres
Also known as Romina Torres Torres
Romina Torres is a computer science researcher in Chile whose work joins artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, from detecting multi-stage cyberattacks to explainable and trustworthy machine learning. After engineering degrees in 2003 and a doctorate in 2014 at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, she served as alternate director of a FONDEF project on an intelligent system for cardiovascular telerehabilitation from 2019 to 2022, and led an ANID Fondecyt project on multi-stage attacks from 2022 to 2025. In 2025, she published a Transformer-based method that attributes network attacks to specific attackers and took part in the U.S. Department of State's Humphrey Fellowship; in 2026, she coauthored TWEEF, a framework for estimating the trustworthiness of machine-learning models. She is an associate professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, a principal researcher at Data Observatory and a CENIA researcher who heads the AI Safety component of the LatamGPT language model.

Timeline
-
2002–2014
Degrees at Santa María
In 2002, Conicyt selects her for its first technology internship program in Silicon Valley. She earns an engineering degree in computer science and a master's degree in computer engineering science at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María in 2003, and a doctorate in computer engineering there in 2014.
-
2019–2022
Cardiovascular telerehabilitation project
From 2019 to 2022, she is alternate director of FONDEF IDEA I+D project ID19I10356, carried out with Fundación Kaplan to develop an intelligent system that supports the telerehabilitation of cardiovascular patients.
-
2019–2023
Honours for cybersecurity and AI
The Senate of Chile recognizes her in 2019 as a member of the Instituto Nacional de Ciberseguridad, and Viña del Mar names her an outstanding woman in innovation in 2020. The Alianza Chilena de Ciberseguridad names her a Woman in Cybersecurity in 2021, and in 2022 the Atlantic Council's GeoTech Center selects her for its AI-Connect international program on responsible AI. In 2023, she receives the award for contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, for Goal 5, gender equality.
-
2022–2025
Tracking multi-stage cyberattacks
From 2022 to 2025, she is principal investigator of ANID Fondecyt de iniciación project 11221155, a framework to detect, monitor and analyze the evolution of multi-stage cyberattacks during runtime.
-
2025
Attributing network attacks with Transformers
Her paper on attacker attribution in multi-step and multi-adversarial network attacks appears in Applied Sciences in 2025. A Transformer-encoder model classifies sequences of network alerts from capture-the-flag data and reaches 99.98% accuracy, against 80.62% for a multilayer-perceptron baseline.
-
2025
A Humphrey Fellowship
In 2025, she takes part in the U.S. Department of State's Distinguished Humphrey Fellowship Program on Emerging Technology Policy, with academic activities at Duke University and a visiting professorship at the Army Cyber Institute at West Point.
-
2026
The TWEEF trust framework
In 2026, she coauthors TWEEF in Applied Sciences, a modular framework that evaluates the trustworthiness of machine-learning models through performance, fairness and interpretability.
-
As of October 2026
Professor and AI safety researcher
She is an associate professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, where the AwareLab group develops Intrusion.Aware, a FONDEF platform that combines host-level monitoring, intrusion detection and explanations for the triage process. She is a principal researcher at Data Observatory and a CENIA researcher who heads the AI Safety component of the LatamGPT language model. In August 2026, she takes part in the Humphrey Alumni Global Policy Dialogue in Quito.
