Resmi Suresh
Resmi Suresh is a chemical engineer who applies data science and machine learning to batteries, fault detection and process systems. After switching from biotechnology to chemical engineering at NIT Calicut, she did master's work at IIT Madras with Raghunathan Rengaswamy that grew into a PhD on modeling rechargeable batteries, and she published two papers on battery modeling and optimal charging in 2018. Postdoctoral research at Columbia University on fault detection and diagnosis preceded her years as an Assistant Professor of chemical engineering at IIT Guwahati from 2019 to 2022, and by 2022 she was also an Associate Researcher at the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and AI at IIT Madras. In 2023, CRC Press published her textbook Data Science for Engineers, written with Rengaswamy.

Timeline
-
By 2017
Battery modeling at IIT Madras
She starts a B.Tech in biotechnology at NIT Calicut and moves to chemical engineering after a year. Her master's project on batteries at IIT Madras, done with Raghunathan Rengaswamy, grows into a PhD on modeling rechargeable batteries. In 2017, she coauthors a book chapter with Rengaswamy on capacity fade minimizing model predictive control for charge-discharge cycles in lithium-ion batteries.
-
2018
Papers on battery capacity fade
Computers & Chemical Engineering publishes her two-part series "Modeling and control of battery systems" with Raghunathan Rengaswamy in 2018. Part I revisits Butler–Volmer equations to model the non-linear coupling of capacity fade mechanisms, and Part II presents a model predictive controller for optimal charging.
-
By 2019
Fault diagnosis at Columbia
After her PhD, she does postdoctoral research at Columbia University on fault detection and diagnosis. In 2019, she coauthors "A hierarchical approach for causal modeling of process systems" in Computers & Chemical Engineering with Abhishek Sivaram and Venkat Venkatasubramanian.
-
2019–2022
Assistant professor at IIT Guwahati
In 2019, she returns to India as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Guwahati and sets up a research laboratory on systems engineering for rechargeable batteries and electric vehicles. Her work covers algorithms for online fault detection and diagnosis, control algorithms for industrial systems, and applied optimization and machine learning. She holds the post until 2022.
-
2021
Review of electrochemical energy technologies
With Deepa Elizabeth Eapen, Sairaj Patil and Raghunathan Rengaswamy, she publishes a 2021 Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews paper on a systems engineering perspective on electrochemical energy technologies. It compares secondary batteries, fuel cells and flow batteries and proposes a framework for choosing the technology best suited to an application.
-
2022
Associate researcher at RBCDSAI
In 2022, she is an Associate Researcher at the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and AI at IIT Madras, drawn by her interest in AI and data science for building safer batteries and industrial systems. A 2022 book chapter with M. Aswin Krishna, Ayush Kedawat and Abhishek Bansal covers feature engineering for neural network-based oscillation detection in process industries.
-
2023
The Data Science for Engineers textbook
CRC Press publishes Data Science for Engineers in 2023, a textbook she coauthors with Raghunathan Rengaswamy. Its chapters run from linear algebra and optimization to statistical foundations, function approximation and classification.
