Ramachandran Thiruvengadam

Ramachandran Thiruvengadam is a medical researcher in India who builds data-driven tools for estimating gestational age and studying pregnancy outcomes. He holds an MD and a Diploma in Child Health, and in 2020 he was among the authors of the work that produced Garbhini-GA1, an Indian population-specific dating formula built on features that machine learning algorithms identified. In 2021 he was first author of a Lancet Infectious Diseases study of ChAdOx1 vaccine effectiveness during the delta surge, and in 2024 he was a corresponding author of the paper introducing Garbhini-GA2 and a coauthor of GAUGE, a deep learning model that estimates gestational age from fetal head ultrasound images. He is an associate professor at the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), an associate research fellow at the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at IIT Madras, and an assistant professor of biochemistry at the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences.

Timeline

  1. 2020

    Garbhini-GA1 dating formula

In 2020, he is among the authors of a medRxiv preprint that compares first-trimester dating methods for gestational age estimation in the GARBH-Ini cohort of North Indian women. Machine learning algorithms, including generalised linear modelling and random forest, identify the features that correlate with gestational age, and a polynomial regression approach yields Garbhini-GA1, a quadratic formula based on the length of the fetus.

  2. 2021

    COVID-19 pregnancy and vaccine studies

In August 2021, he is among the authors of the INTERCOVID multinational cohort study in JAMA Pediatrics, which follows 706 pregnant women with COVID-19 and 1424 without it across 43 institutions in 18 countries. In November 2021, he is first author of a Lancet Infectious Diseases test-negative case-control study in Faridabad, India, in which two doses of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine reach 63.1% effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2 infection during the delta surge.

  3. 2024

    The Garbhini-GA2 dating model

In 2024, he is a corresponding author, with Himanshu Sinha of IIT Madras, of the paper introducing Garbhini-GA2 in The Lancet Regional Health - Southeast Asia. The polynomial regression model, developed with a genetic algorithm-based method, estimates gestational age in the second and third trimesters and reduces the median error by more than three times compared with the Hadlock formula. He is one of three inventors of the formula, which IIT Madras submitted for an Indian patent, and a grant from IIT Madras's Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence partly supports its external validation.

  4. 2024

    The GAUGE deep learning model

In 2024, he is among the authors of a study introducing GAUGE, the GArbh-Ini Ultrasound image-based Gestational age Estimator, a deep learning model that estimates gestational age from fetal ultrasound images. It reaches a mean absolute error of 2.8 days on an internal test set drawn from the Garbh-Ini cohort.

  5. January 2026

    Dengue and SARS-CoV-2 antibodies

In January 2026, he and colleagues at THSTI are among the authors of a Frontiers in Immunology paper showing that SARS-CoV-2 spike antibodies cross-react with dengue virus and enhance infection in vitro and in vivo. Mice infected with SARS-CoV-2 three weeks before dengue virus show elevated dengue pathogenesis.

  6. As of October 2026

    Associate Professor at THSTI

He is an associate professor at THSTI in Faridabad, an associate research fellow at the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at IIT Madras, and an assistant professor of biochemistry at the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences. By 2024 he is affiliated with the Maternal and Child Health Program at THSTI and the Department of Biochemistry at PIMS. He holds an MD and a Diploma in Child Health.
