Himanshu Sinha

Himanshu Sinha is a systems geneticist at IIT Madras who builds data-science and AI tools for maternal and child health in India, alongside his work on yeast genetics. After a Cambridge Ph.D. in plant science and postdoctoral work at Duke University Medical Center and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, he became a Reader at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai and was at IIT Madras by 2016. In 2024, he led the data science work behind Garbhini-GA2, an AI model that estimates gestational age from Indian population data and cuts error by almost three times compared with Western formulas. His lab received grants in 2024 and 2025 for pan-India validation of gestational age models and an LLM-based healthcare assistant for pregnant women, and in 2025 he published a Nature Communications study of interacting yeast variants. He is a professor in IIT Madras's Department of Biotechnology, where he leads the Systems Genetics Laboratory, and is affiliate faculty at the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI.

Timeline

  1. By 2006

    Cambridge PhD and Duke postdoc

He earns his Ph.D. in the Department of Plant Science at Cambridge University's Downing College and carries out postdoctoral work at the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis at Duke University Medical Center. In 2006, he is first author of “Complex Genetic Interactions in a Quantitative Trait Locus” in PLOS Genetics, a yeast study written with Bradly P. Nicholson, Lars M. Steinmetz and John H. McCusker.

  2. By 2015

    Reader at TIFR Mumbai

He works as a senior postdoc in the Genome Biology Unit of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg and then as a Reader in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai. In 2015, he publishes “Temporal Expression Profiling Identifies Pathways Mediating Effect of Causal Variant on Phenotype” in PLOS Genetics from that institute, with Lars M. Steinmetz, Julien Gagneur and colleagues, which characterizes how a functional MKT1 variant shapes sporulation efficiency in yeast.

  3. 2016

    Biotechnology faculty at IIT Madras

By 2016, he is at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, in the Department of Biotechnology's Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta School of Biosciences and the Initiative for Biological Systems Engineering. In September 2016, he publishes “Genetic Regulation of Phenotypic Plasticity and Canalisation in Yeast Growth” in PLOS ONE with Anupama Yadav and Kaustubh Dhole, mapping loci that regulate phenotypic plasticity in yeast grown in 34 environments.

  4. 2021

    GARBH-Ini data science

In 2021, he coauthors a BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth paper comparing first-trimester dating methods for gestational age estimation in a North Indian cohort. In a December 2021 talk, he describes data science on the GARBH-Ini cohort, which enrolled more than 8000 pregnant participants and generated about 10 million data points, and outlines models for gestational age and preterm birth risk funded by the Gates Foundation through Grand Challenges India and BIRAC.

  5. 2024

    The Garbhini-GA2 gestational age model

In February 2024, IIT Madras and THSTI Faridabad announce Garbhini-GA2, an AI model that estimates gestational age in the second and third trimesters from Indian population data. He leads the data science work and is corresponding author of the paper in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia, which reports that the genetic algorithm-based model reduces error by almost three times compared with Western formulas and holds up in an external cohort from South India.

  6. 2024–2025

    Grants for maternal health AI

In November 2024, his lab receives a BIRAC Grand Challenges India grant of Rs 850 lakh for pan-India validation of gestational age models. In January 2025, it receives a Rs 77 lakh grant to develop an LLM-based healthcare assistant for pregnant women. In an interview published in February 2025, he explains how multilingual large language models can support diagnostics and remote consultations in local languages across India.

  7. 2025

    Interacting variants in yeast

In August 2025, he and Srijith Sasikumar publish “Interaction of genetic variants activates latent metabolic pathways in yeast” in Nature Communications, with Shannara Taylor Parkins and Suresh Sudarsan of the Technical University of Denmark. Combining transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, they show that two yeast SNPs, MKT1 89G and TAO3 4477C, together activate the arginine biosynthesis pathway and suppress ribosome biogenesis.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at IIT Madras

He is a professor in the Department of Biotechnology at IIT Madras and leads its Systems Genetics Laboratory, which uses data science and AI to predict adverse health outcomes and improve patient care in maternal and child health. He is also affiliate faculty at the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, a school founded in 2024.
