Rahul Sukthankar
Rahul Sukthankar is a computer vision researcher whose work spans local image features, video classification and action datasets. After a computer science degree at Princeton in 1991, he earned a robotics PhD at Carnegie Mellon in 1997, then worked at Just Research, HP Labs and Compaq Research, and Intel Research before joining Google in 2011. His papers include PCA-SIFT in 2004, Large-scale Video Classification with Convolutional Neural Networks in 2014 and the AVA action dataset in 2017. In 2018 he became an IEEE Fellow, and in 2021 he was General Chair of CVPR; the D4RT paper he coauthored won the CVPR 2026 Best Paper Award. He is VP Research at Google DeepMind, where he co-leads the Perception organization.

Timeline
-
1991–1997
Princeton and a robotics PhD
He earns a B.S.E. in computer science at Princeton in 1991 and a PhD in Robotics at Carnegie Mellon in 1997. His thesis, Situation Awareness for Tactical Driving, presents SAPIENT, a planner that controls vehicles in the SHIVA tactical simulator.
-
2000–2011
Compaq, Intel and PCA-SIFT
He is a research scientist at Just Research in Pittsburgh and, from 2000 to 2003, a senior researcher at HP Labs and Compaq Research. From 2003 to 2011, he is a senior principal research scientist at Intel Research. In 2004, with Yan Ke, he publishes PCA-SIFT at CVPR, a local image descriptor that applies principal components analysis to the normalized gradient patch and proves more compact than SIFT.
-
2011–2014
Joining Google AI Perception
In 2011, he joins Google, where he is principal scientist and director of Google AI Perception. In 2014, he is a scientist at Google Research who works on object recognition and video understanding, and he coauthors Large-scale Video Classification with Convolutional Neural Networks, which evaluates CNNs on a new dataset of 1 million YouTube videos in 487 classes.
-
2017–2018
The AVA action dataset
He is on the core team behind AVA, which Google releases in October 2017 as a dataset of YouTube videos annotated with 80 atomic actions, such as walk and shake hands. The 2018 CVPR paper describes AVA as 437 15-minute video clips with 1.59M action labels.
-
2018
Elevated to IEEE Fellow
He is selected as an IEEE Fellow for 2018, with a citation for contributions to video understanding, while he works at Google.
-
2020–2021
General Chair of CVPR 2021
He holds an adjunct research professorship at the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute from 1997 to 2020 and courtesy faculty status at the University of Central Florida from 2007 to 2020. In 2021, he is General Chair of CVPR, the IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, which is held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
-
2025–2026
D4RT wins CVPR Best Paper
In December 2025, he is among the authors of D4RT, a feedforward model that uses a unified transformer to infer depth, spatio-temporal correspondence and camera parameters from a single video. In 2026, the paper receives the Best Paper Award at CVPR.
-
As of October 2026
VP Research at Google DeepMind
He is VP Research at Google DeepMind, where he co-leads the Perception organization. His work covers computer vision and machine learning.
