Rahul Ratnakar Marathe

Rahul Ratnakar Marathe is a professor in the Department of Management Studies at IIT Madras and affiliate faculty of its Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, where he works on stochastic modeling, decision-making under uncertainty and data analytics. After an engineering degree in Mumbai and a post at Reliance Industries, he completed an M.S. in 2003 and a Ph.D. in 2006 in industrial engineering at Iowa State University. He joined IIT Madras as an assistant professor in 2007, received an IBM Faculty Award in 2010, and became a professor in 2019. In 2024, he coauthored a systematic review of revenue management in taxi services with Swaminathan Rammohan and Nandan Sudarsanam. The Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, founded in 2024, lists him among its faculty.

    Engineer at Reliance Industries

    He earns a B.E. in Production Engineering at VJTI, Mumbai University, in 1998. From August 1998 to December 2000, he is Assistant Manager at Reliance Industries Ltd.

  2. 2003–2007

    Industrial engineering at Iowa State

    He earns an M.S. in industrial engineering in 2003 and a Ph.D. in industrial engineering with a statistics minor in 2006, both at Iowa State University, which gives him its Research Excellence Award in August 2006. From July 2006 to June 2007, he is a postdoctoral fellow in the university's Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering.

    Assistant Professor at IIT Madras

    He joins the Department of Management Studies at IIT Madras as Assistant Professor in July 2007. In 2011, he works with Prof. B. Shankar, Prof. G. Srinivasan and Prof. Usha Mohan on a sponsored study of a smart analytics framework for GIS/GPS data.

    He receives an IBM Faculty Award in 2010.

    Associate Professor to Professor

    He becomes Associate Professor in July 2013 and Professor in March 2019 in the Department of Management Studies at IIT Madras. From 2014, he is Secretary of the Society of Operations Management.

    Revenue management of taxi services

    In 2024, he coauthors with Swaminathan Rammohan and Nandan Sudarsanam a systematic review of revenue management in taxi services in Management Review Quarterly. The review analyzes 110 research articles across pricing, market structure, business models and technology, structure, and marketing.
