R. Venkata Rao

Also known as Ravipudi Venkata Rao

R. Venkata Rao is a mechanical engineering professor in Surat, India, whose work on metaheuristic optimization includes the TLBO, Jaya and Rao algorithms, which need no algorithm-specific parameters. He completed a B.Tech. in 1988, an M.Tech. in 1991, a Ph.D. in 2002 and a D.Sc. in 2017. His 2011 teaching–learning-based optimization paper with VJ Savsani and DP Vakharia was followed by a book on the method in 2015, the Jaya algorithm in 2016, a Jaya book in 2018 and the Rao-1, Rao-2 and Rao-3 algorithms in 2020; in 2024, he published his BHARAT papers on multi-criteria decision making. He is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat.

    Four degrees, the last in Poland

    He earns a B.Tech. in 1988, an M.Tech. in 1991 and a Ph.D. in 2002, then a D.Sc. from Poland in 2017.

  2. 2011–2012

    The TLBO algorithm

    With VJ Savsani and DP Vakharia, he publishes Teaching–learning-based optimization: a novel method for constrained mechanical design optimization problems in Computer-Aided Design in 2011. The same coauthors present TLBO for continuous non-linear large-scale problems in Information Sciences in 2012.

  3. 2015

    A book on TLBO

    Springer-Verlag London publishes his book Teaching Learning Based Optimization Algorithm and its Engineering Applications in 2015.

  4. 2016

    The Jaya algorithm

    In 2016, he publishes Jaya: A simple and new optimization algorithm for solving constrained and unconstrained optimization problems in the International Journal of Industrial Engineering Computations. Like TLBO, Jaya needs no algorithm-specific parameters.

  5. 2018

    The Jaya book

    Jaya: An Advanced Optimization Algorithm and its Engineering Applications appears in 2018. The book describes the algorithm and examines applications of its versions in mechanical, thermal, manufacturing, electrical, computer, civil and structural engineering.

  6. 2020

    Three Rao algorithms

    In 2020, he introduces Rao-1, Rao-2 and Rao-3, three metaphor-less optimization algorithms built on the best and worst solutions in the population and the random interactions between candidate solutions. They need no algorithm-specific parameters, and researchers worldwide give them significant attention.

  7. 2024

    The BHARAT decision method

    In 2024, the International Journal of Industrial Engineering Computations carries his BHARAT papers, which present a multi-criteria decision-making method with multi-attribute applications in the industrial environment.

    He is a Professor (Higher Administrative Grade) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat.
