Pindar Van Arman

Pindar Van Arman builds painting robots that create art autonomously with neural networks. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1996, built his first painting robot around 2005, and earned a master's degree at George Washington University's Corcoran School of the Arts and Design in 2010. In 2017, he created Emerging Faces, a 44-canvas neural-network series made autonomously; the project won first place in RobotArt in 2018, and he began certifying robot paintings through Verisart in 2018. By February 2022, Ghosts in the Machine - bitGANg 1001 had joined an Artsy x Verisart curated auction as a Certified NFT; in 2023, he created AI Imagined Faces for Bright Moments Tokyo, with 150 paintings and 100 fully on-chain pieces, and released Reflection, a generative art project on Ethereum, in February 2024. As of October 2026, he runs Sovrn Art with Ezra Shibboleth, and CloudPainter is his AI painting agent seeking direct experience of the world.

    Ohio Wesleyan graduation

    He graduates from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1996.

  2. 2005–2010

    First robot and Corcoran master's

    Around 2005, he builds and programs his first painting robot. He earns a master's degree at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University in 2010.

  3. 2017–2018

    Emerging Faces and RobotArt

    In 2017, he creates Emerging Faces, a 44-canvas series made autonomously with neural networks. The robot uses GANs to imagine and paint faces until it recognizes one. In 2018, the project wins first place in RobotArt, and he first uses Verisart to certify paintings by his robots after the win.

  4. February 2022

    Ghosts in the Machine as NFT

    In February 2022, Ghosts in the Machine - bitGANg 1001 joins an Artsy x Verisart curated auction as a Certified NFT on Verisart.

  5. 2023

    AI Imagined Faces in Tokyo

    He creates AI Imagined Faces for Bright Moments Tokyo in 2023: 150 paintings and 100 fully on-chain digital pieces are distributed as part of the on-site mint.

  6. February 2024

    The Reflection art project

    In February 2024, he releases Reflection, a generative art project on Ethereum whose Reflective AI system uses feedback loops and multimodal mark-making.

  7. 2025

    Christie's nine-canvas selection

    In 2025, a Christie’s presentation includes nine unique canvases from Emerging Faces, Van Arman’s 44-canvas series.

    Sovrn Art and CloudPainter

    As of October 2026, he runs Sovrn Art with Ezra Shibboleth. CloudPainter is his AI painting agent, which seeks direct experience of the world.
