Peter Nordin
Peter Nordin was a Swedish computer scientist whose work linked genetic programming to machine-code induction and robot learning. He earned a master's degree in computer science and engineering at Chalmers in 1988 and completed a computer science PhD at Dortmund in 1997; his thesis introduced CGPS for automatic program induction. With Wolfgang Banzhaf, Robert Keller, and Frank Francone, he coauthored a genetic programming textbook in 1998, then worked on genetic approaches to humanoid walking in studies from 2001 and 2003. He described Brainstorm as cognitive software for autonomous robots, coauthored a 2019 anomaly-detection paper at Semcon, and died in 2020 at age 55.
Timeline
-
1988
A master's degree at Chalmers
A Swedish computer scientist, he earns a master's degree in computer science and engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in 1988.
-
1997
CGPS for program induction
He completes a computer science PhD at the University of Dortmund in 1997. His thesis presents the Compiling Genetic Programming System (CGPS), a machine-learning system that combines evolutionary program induction with large-scale manipulation of binary code to produce programs automatically.
-
1998
A genetic programming textbook
With Wolfgang Banzhaf, Robert E. Keller, and Frank D. Francone, he coauthors Genetic Programming: An Introduction in 1998. The book introduces genetic programming as a method for automatic program generation.
-
2001
Genetic programming for robot walking
With Jens Ziegler and Krister Wolff, he coauthors a 2001 paper on a small humanoid walking robot that serves as a platform for the genetic evolution of walking.
-
2003
Linear genetic programming for walking
In 2003, he and Krister Wolff study linear genetic programming for learning biped locomotion from first principles on a simulated humanoid robot.
-
2007
Brainstorm for autonomous robots
In 2007, the Institute of Robotics in Scandinavia presents Brainstorm at the RoboBusiness Conference in Boston. Nordin describes it as a complete cognitive software system for autonomous robots.
-
2019
Embedded anomaly detection
At Semcon, he coauthors a 2019 paper that uses encoder-decoder and linear genetic programming methods to detect anomalies in data from an autonomous mini-vehicle.
-
2020
His death in 2020
He dies in 2020 at age 55.
