Peter Nelson
Peter Nelson is a computer scientist whose AI research connects heuristic search with transportation, manufacturing, and bioinformatics. After studying mathematics and computer science at North Park and computer science at Northwestern, he joined UIC in 1988 and founded its Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in 1990. His 1994 paper “Perimeter Search” develops an admissible heuristic, and his lab builds traffic systems for real-time route planning. He led UIC’s computer science department and College of Engineering, then returned to the faculty in August 2024. As of October 2026, he is a professor of computer science at UIC, where his research applies AI search to transportation, manufacturing, bioinformatics, and high-availability computer clusters.

Timeline
-
1984–1988
North Park and Northwestern
Raised in the Seattle area, he earns a BA in mathematics and computer science at North Park in 1984, an MS in computer science at Northwestern in 1986, and a PhD there in 1988. He joins UIC as an assistant professor of computer science in 1988.
-
1990
Founding UIC's AI Laboratory
He founds UIC’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in 1990 to work on applied AI projects.
-
1991–1995
ADVANCE and a traffic map
From 1991 to 1995, he conducts intelligent-transportation research for ADVANCE, supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. In 1994–1995, his lab builds a real-time web map that shows current traffic conditions.
-
1994
The Perimeter Search paper
He publishes “Perimeter Search” in the Artificial Intelligence Journal in 1994. The admissible heuristic compares generated nodes with a perimeter around the goal and can end the search when they match.
-
2001–2024
Leading UIC engineering
He serves as the inaugural head of UIC’s computer science department from 2001 to 2007, then becomes interim dean in 2007 and permanent dean in 2008. After 17 years as dean, he returns to the computer science faculty in August 2024.
-
2003–2014
Gateway route information
In 2003, he receives the Federal Highway Administration’s National Award for Traveler Information Web Sites for UIC’s Gateway system. In 2008, he serves as co-PI on a Northwestern route-guidance project to develop a public path-search tool using the Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee system. In 2014, he leads a $5.5 million IDOT contract as principal investigator for continued research, development and operation of the Gateway Traveler Information System.
-
2020
A University of Illinois Scholar
He becomes a University of Illinois Scholar in 2020, a three-year award for faculty research and teaching. His applied AI work includes mobile-health applications with UIC’s BiAffect team.
-
As of October 2026
Professor of computer science
He is a professor of computer science at UIC. His research applies heuristic search and other AI methods to transportation, manufacturing, bioinformatics and high-availability computer clusters.
