Orna Grumberg
Also known as Orna Grümberg, ארנה גרימברג
Orna Grumberg is an Israeli computer scientist at the Technion who works on model checking, the automated verification of hardware and software, and on automated program repair that uses automata learning. Born in Hadera in 1952, she earned her B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in the Technion's Computer Science Department, chaired the Computer-Aided Verification conference in 1997, and co-wrote the book Model Checking in 1999. Academia Europaea elected her in 2013, and in 2015 she shared the CAV Award for counterexample-guided abstraction refinement (CEGAR) and was named an ACM Fellow. The Technical University of Munich gave her an honorary doctorate in 2017, and in 2021 she gave a Distinguished Lecture at the Simons Institute on automated formal program repair. She holds the Leumi Chair of Science at the Technion.
Timeline
-
By 2014
Technion degrees in computer science
She is born in Hadera, Israel, in 1952. She earns her B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in the Computer Science Department at the Technion.
-
1997–1999
CAV chair and Model Checking
She chairs the Computer-Aided Verification (CAV) conference in 1997. In 1999, MIT Press publishes Model Checking, which she writes with Edmund Clarke and Doron Peled and which serves as the main reference for learning the field in academia and industry.
-
2005–2011
Full professor and Leumi Chair
She becomes a full professor in the Technion's Computer Science Department in 2005 and takes the Leumi Chair in Science in 2011. In 2010, she heads the committee for the CAV Award.
-
2013
Elected to Academia Europaea
In 2013, she is elected to Academia Europaea, in its Informatics section.
-
2015
CAV Award and ACM Fellowship
In 2015, she shares the CAV Award with Edmund Clarke and others for the localization-reduction technique and counterexample-guided abstraction refinement (CEGAR). The ACM also names her a Fellow in 2015 for contributions to research in automated formal verification of hardware and software systems.
-
2017
Honorary doctorate from Munich
In May 2017, she receives an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Munich, as part of the 50th anniversary of computer science in Munich.
-
2021
Karp Lecture on program repair
In Spring 2021, she is a Visiting Scientist in the Theoretical Foundations of Computer Systems program at the Simons Institute. In February 2021, she gives the Richard M. Karp Distinguished Lecture on automated formal program repair, covering fault localization for the repair tool AllRepair and a method that combines assume-guarantee verification, automata learning and repair.
-
As of October 2026
Leumi Chair at the Technion
She is a professor in the Technion's Computer Science Department and holds the Leumi Chair of Science. Her research interests include program repair and finding security vulnerabilities with formal methods.
