Niki Trigoni

Niki Trigoni is a computer scientist whose research links machine learning, robotics and sensor networks with autonomous systems and indoor positioning. She earned a DPhil at Cambridge, worked at Cornell and Birkbeck, then moved to Oxford in 2007 to establish its Sensor Networks Group. At Oxford, she helped direct the AIMS doctoral centre, co-authored DeepVO for visual odometry and co-founded Navenio with Tim Weil in 2015 to build indoor location systems with sensor fusion and machine learning. She won CTO of the Year at the Women in IT Awards in 2020 and became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2022. As of October 2026, she is Professor of Computer Science at Oxford and CEO of Navenio; in December 2025, she wrote as Academic Lead for Oxford's MSc AI for Business and discussed edge-AI research for hospital operations.

Timeline

  1. 2001–2007

    Cambridge doctorate and early posts

She earns a DPhil at the University of Cambridge in 2001, works as a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell from 2002 to 2004, and works as a Lecturer at Birkbeck College from 2004 to 2007.

  2. Since 2007

    Sensor Networks at Oxford

She moves to Oxford in 2007 and establishes the Sensor Networks Group, where her research covers localization, communication and in-network processing for sensor networks.

  3. 2014

    Co-directing the AIMS centre

Oxford launches the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Autonomous Intelligent Machines and Systems in January 2014 under the direction of N. Trigoni and S. Roberts. The programme combines robotics, machine learning, verification and control, and sensor and actuator networks.

  4. 2015

    Co-founding Navenio

In 2015, she co-founds Navenio with Tim Weil; its indoor location systems use sensor fusion, signal processing and machine learning to map indoor spaces and movement.

  5. 2017

    DeepVO for visual odometry

In 2017, she co-authors DeepVO, an end-to-end visual odometry system built on deep recurrent convolutional neural networks.

  6. 2020

    CTO of the Year

She wins CTO of the Year at the Women in IT Awards London in 2020.

  7. 2022

    A Royal Academy fellowship

The Royal Academy of Engineering elects her as a Fellow in 2022, among 72 new Fellows in engineering and technology. As Navenio's founder and CTO, she led development and commercialisation of a location-aware workforce system deployed across several NHS trusts.

  8. As of October 2026

    Oxford professor and Navenio CEO

As of October 2026, she is Professor of Computer Science at Oxford and CEO of Navenio. In December 2025, she writes as Academic Lead for Oxford's MSc AI for Business and describes translating edge-AI research into hospital workflow improvements.
