Nigel Gilbert

Also known as Geoffrey Nigel Gilbert

Nigel Gilbert is a British sociologist at the University of Surrey who applied social science to the design of intelligent knowledge-based systems and became one of the first to use agent-based models in the social sciences. After an engineering degree and a doctorate at Cambridge under Michael Mulkay, he lectured at York from 1974 to 1976, joined Surrey, and founded its Social and Computer Sciences research group in 1984 with an Alvey Programme grant. He organised the first Simulating Societies workshop in 1992, established the Centre for Research in Social Simulation in 1997, and edited the Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation, launched in 1998, until 2014. He became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1999, wrote Agent-based Models in 2008, and was appointed CBE in 2016, when he also became Director of the Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus. He holds a Distinguished Chair in Computational Social Science at Surrey, directs its Centre for Research in Social Simulation, and co-edited with Petra Ahrweiler an open access volume on agent-based simulations and AI in public social services.

Timeline

  1. 1974–1976

    Lecturer at York

After an engineering degree at Cambridge, he turns to sociology and earns a doctorate there on the sociology of scientific knowledge under Michael Mulkay. He is a lecturer at the University of York from 1974 to 1976, then joins the University of Surrey.

  2. 1984

    An Alvey-funded research group

In 1984, he founds the Social and Computer Sciences research group at Surrey with a grant from the Alvey Programme. The group applies social science to the design of intelligent knowledge-based systems.

  3. 1991–1995

    Simulating Societies workshops and books

He becomes a professor in Surrey's Department of Sociology in 1991 and, in the early 1990s, is one of the first to use agent-based models in the social sciences. In 1992, he organises the first of a series of workshops on Simulating Societies; the book Simulating Societies, edited with Jim Doran, follows in 1994, and Artificial Societies, with Rosaria Conte, in 1995.

  4. 1997–2014

    A simulation centre and journal

He establishes the Centre for Research in Social Simulation at Surrey in 1997. The Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation launches in 1998, and he is its editor until 2014. From 1998 to 2005, he is also a Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey.

  5. 1999

A Royal Academy of Engineering fellowship

In 1999, he is appointed a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the first practising social scientist to become one.

  6. 1999–2010

    Books on agent-based modelling

He publishes Simulation for the Social Scientist with Klaus G. Troitzsch in 1999, a how-to textbook on social simulation. Agent-based Models appears in 2008, and he edits Computational Social Science in 2010.

  7. 2016

Director of CECAN and a CBE

In 2016, he becomes Director of the newly established Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus (CECAN), which is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council. The Queen's Birthday Honours of 2016 name him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to engineering and the social sciences.

  8. As of October 2026

    A Distinguished Chair at Surrey

As of October 2026, he holds a Distinguished Chair in Computational Social Science at Surrey and directs the Centre for Research in Social Simulation, the Institute of Advanced Studies and CECAN, which he has led since its start in 2016. With Petra Ahrweiler, he edits the open access volume Participatory Modelling and Simulation to Improve AI-based Public Social Services, whose agent-based simulations explore questions around AI, welfare-related social assessment and value diversity.
