Negar Rostamzadeh
Negar Rostamzadeh is a research scientist who studies the social implications of machine learning, after earlier work in video understanding and generative models. She completed a PhD at the University of Trento in 2017 under Nicu Sebe, spent two years at Mila with Aaron Courville, and worked as a research scientist at Element AI before joining Google. In 2018 she was first author of the Fashion-Gen dataset and challenge, and she founded the workshop series Computer Vision for Fashion, Art, and Design and Ethical Considerations in Creative Applications, held from ECCV 2018 to CVPR 2023. In 2022 she was first author of Healthsheet, a questionnaire for documenting health datasets, and she co-authored a Nature Medicine toolbox for health-equity harms in large language models in 2024 and the Responsible AI Measures Dataset in 2025. She is a Staff Research Scientist on Google's Responsible AI team, a core industry member at Mila, and an adjunct professor at McGill University.

Timeline
-
2015–2017
Trento PhD and Mila years
She completes a PhD at the University of Trento in 2017 under Prof. Nicu Sebe, focusing on video understanding. She also spends two years at Mila, from 2015 to 2017, working with Prof. Aaron Courville on attention mechanisms in videos, generative models, and video captioning, and she interns with Google's Machine Intelligence team in 2016.
-
2017
Deep Complex Networks
In 2017, she joins nine co-authors, among them Yoshua Bengio and Christopher J Pal, on Deep Complex Networks. It supplies building blocks for complex-valued deep neural networks, including complex convolutions and complex batch-normalization.
-
2018
Element AI and Fashion-Gen
Before joining Google, she works as a research scientist at Element AI, specializing in efficient learning from limited data in computer vision and multimodal problems. In 2018, she is first author of Fashion-Gen, a dataset of 293,008 high-definition fashion images paired with item descriptions from professional stylists, and of a challenge launched on top of it.
-
2018–2024
Creative vision workshops
She founds and chairs the workshop series Computer Vision for Fashion, Art, and Design as well as Ethical Considerations in Creative Applications, held at computer vision venues from ECCV 2018 to CVPR 2023. In 2024, she organizes the workshop Ethical Considerations in Creative Applications of Computer Vision at CVPR.
-
2022
Healthsheet and a harms taxonomy
In 2022, she is first author of Healthsheet, an adaptation of the datasheet questionnaire for documenting health datasets used in machine learning. She also co-authors a taxonomy of sociotechnical harms from algorithmic systems, built from a scoping review of computing research, and is among the organizers of the NeurIPS 2022 tutorial Creative Culture and Machine Learning.
-
2024
Health equity toolbox for LLMs
In 2024, she is among the authors of the Nature Medicine paper A toolbox for surfacing health equity harms and biases in large language models. The toolbox offers a framework for human assessment of LLM answers for bias and EquityMedQA, a collection of seven datasets enriched for adversarial queries, tested in a case study with Med-PaLM 2.

December 2025
A Responsible AI measures dataset
In December 2025, Scientific Data publishes the Responsible AI Measures Dataset, which she co-authors with Shalaleh Rismani, Renee Shelby, AJung Moon and others. The dataset consolidates 12,067 data points across 791 evaluation measures covering 11 ethical principles, and she serves as a co-principal investigator on the Mila-Google grant that funds the project.

As of October 2026
Staff research scientist at Google
She is a Staff Research Scientist on Google's Responsible AI team, where her research focuses on the social implications of machine learning and evaluation systems and on equitable, fair ML systems. She is also a core industry member at Mila and an adjunct professor at McGill University's School of Computer Science, and since 2020 she serves on the board of the Montreal AI Symposium.
