Mohammad Showkat-Ul Alam
Also known as Mohammad S. Alam, Mohammad S Alam, Mohammad Alam
Mohammad Showkat-Ul Alam is an electrical engineer and engineering dean whose research in optical pattern recognition and high resolution image reconstruction reaches into deep learning. A graduate of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Wayne State University and the University of Dayton, he chaired the Fort Wayne Section of IEEE in 1995–1996 and chaired the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of South Alabama, where he won the 2005 Excellence in Research Award. In 2016, the International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow, and he joined Texas A&M University–Kingsville as dean of engineering. He coauthored a 2019 Sensors paper on deep learning for lung nodule detection. Since August 2023, he is dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where new artificial intelligence and robotics degree programs were announced in June 2025.
Timeline
-
1995–1998
IEEE service in Fort Wayne
A graduate of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Wayne State University and the University of Dayton, where he earns a PhD in electrical engineering, he chairs the Fort Wayne Section of IEEE in 1995–1996. He wins Indiana University's 1997 Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching Award and the 1998 Outstanding Engineer Award from IEEE Region 4.
-
2005–2007
Research honors at South Alabama
As professor and chair of electrical and computer engineering at the University of South Alabama, he receives the College of Engineering's 2005 Excellence in Research Award for contributions in image processing, pattern recognition and tracking, and he is an elected Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, UK. At the 2007 SPIE Defense and Security Symposium in Orlando, he presents 10 technical papers, including an invited paper on pattern recognition in hyperspectral imagery and another on super-resolution reconstruction of hyperspectral images. He serves on the panel on Automatic Target Recognition and chairs the session on Pattern Recognition and Processing.
-
2016
Engineering dean in Kingsville
In 2016, he joins Texas A&M University–Kingsville, which appoints him Dean of the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering while he is professor and chair of electrical and computer engineering at the University of South Alabama. His posts there include interim executive director of the High-Performance Computing Center.
-
2016
An IAPR fellowship
He becomes a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition in 2016, cited for contributions to the advancement and development of architectures, algorithms, and performance metrics for optical pattern recognition and high resolution image reconstruction. He is also a Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association.
-
2019
Deep learning for lung nodules
In 2019, he coauthors a Sensors paper with Nasrullah Nasrullah, Jun Sang and colleagues that uses 3D customized mixed link network architectures for lung nodule detection and classification. The system reaches 94% sensitivity and 91% specificity on the LIDC-IDRI datasets, and his listed affiliation is the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering at Texas A&M University–Kingsville.
