Michael Spivey

Also known as Mike Spivey

Michael Spivey is a computer scientist whose work includes logic-programming semantics, Prolog in Haskell, and the Oxford Oberon-2 compiler. Born in 1960, he studied mathematics at Christ's College, Cambridge, and undertook a DPhil on Z notation at Oxford. He wrote books on Z and Prolog, and coauthored papers on logic-program algebra and functional readings of logic programs. After nearly three decades as Oriel's Fellow and Tutor in Computer Science, he is an Emeritus Fellow at the college.

Timeline

  1. 1960–2008

    Cambridge maths and Z notation

Born in 1960, he attends Archbishop Holgate's Grammar School in York and studies mathematics at Christ's College, Cambridge. He undertakes a computer-science DPhil on Z notation at Wolfson College, Oxford. In 2008, he publishes Understanding Z: A Specification Language and its Formal Semantics with Cambridge University Press.

  2. 1992

    A Z reference manual

He publishes The Z Notation: A Reference Manual in 1992.

  3. 1996

    Logic programming through Prolog

In 1996, he publishes An Introduction to Logic Programming through Prolog.

  4. 1999

    Algebra of logic programming

With Silvija Seres and Tony Hoare, he publishes “Algebra of Logic Programming” in the proceedings of ICLP in November 1999. The paper develops an algebraic semantics for logic programming and examines laws shared by predicate calculus and Prolog’s depth-first strategy.

  5. 1999–2000

    Embedding Prolog in Haskell

With Silvija Seres, he publishes “Embedding Prolog into Haskell” in September 1999. Their “Functional Reading of Logic Programs” appears in the Journal of Universal Computer Science in March 2000; each Prolog predicate becomes a Haskell function while preserving its declarative and procedural readings.

  6. September 2002

    The Oxford Oberon-2 compiler

In September 2002, he writes the Oxford Oberon-2 compiler, a portable tool that translates Oberon-2 into bytecode.

  7. 2008

    Understanding Z

He publishes Understanding Z: A Specification Language and its Formal Semantics with Cambridge University Press in 2008.

  8. Since 2024

    Emeritus Fellow at Oriel

Since 2024, he is an Emeritus Fellow at Oriel College. In January 2026, Markus Brill succeeds him as Oriel's Fellow and Tutor in Computer Science after Spivey retires following nearly three decades in the role.
