Michael Rung Tsong Lyu

Also known as Michael R. Lyu, 呂榮聰

Michael Rung Tsong Lyu is a computer scientist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong whose research on software reliability and fault-tolerant software has grown to include machine learning and large language models. After a Ph.D. in computer science at UCLA in 1988, he worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the University of Iowa, Bellcore and Bell Labs before joining CUHK in 1997. He initiated the first International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering in 1990, became an IEEE Fellow in 2004 and an ACM Fellow in 2015, and received the 13th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award in 2020. In 2024, he was named an RGC Senior Research Fellow for a project on large language models and code intelligence, and he coauthored PsychoBench, an ICLR 2024 oral on the psychological portrayal of LLMs. He is Choh-Ming Li Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at CUHK.

Timeline

  1. 1981–1988

A UCLA doctorate in computer science

He earns a B.S. in electrical engineering at National Taiwan University in 1981 and a Ph.D. in computer science at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1988. His thesis, "A Design Paradigm for Multi-Version Software", is advised by Professor Algirdas Avizienis.

  2. 1988–1997

    From JPL to Bell Labs

In 1988, he joins the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a technical staff member, becomes an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Iowa in 1990, and works at Bellcore from 1992 and at Bell Laboratories from 1995. In 1990, he also initiates the first International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE). Software Fault Tolerance (Wiley, 1995) and the Handbook of Software Reliability Engineering (IEEE and McGraw-Hill, 1996) are two book volumes he edits.

  3. 1997–2002

    Joining the CUHK faculty

He joins the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as an associate professor in 1997 and becomes a professor in 2002.

  4. 2004–2010

    Fellowships and a reliability award

He is elected an IEEE Fellow in 2004 and an AAAS Fellow in 2007 for contributions to software reliability engineering and software fault tolerance. In 2008, the Croucher Foundation awards him a Senior Research Fellowship for a project on software reliability techniques for next-generation large-scale distributed systems. He is co-awarded the 2010 IEEE Reliability Society Engineer of the Year Award.

  5. 2015–2021

    ACM Fellow and Guanghua Award

He is named an ACM Fellow in 2015 and is elected a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2021. In 2020, the Chinese Academy of Engineering gives him the 13th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award for his contribution to the theory and applications of software reliability engineering, including the first design paradigm for N-version programming. His research also covers distributed systems, cloud computing, big data analytics and machine learning.

  6. 2019–2022

    Test-of-time awards for recommenders

His CIKM 2008 paper "SoRec: Social Recommendation Using Probabilistic Matrix Factorization" wins the CIKM Test of Time Award in 2019. "Learning to Recommend with Social Trust Ensemble" (SIGIR 2009) wins the SIGIR Test of Time Award in 2020, and "Recommender systems with social regularization" (WSDM 2011) wins the WSDM Test of Time Award in 2022.

  7. 2024

    RGC fellowship and PsychoBench

In July 2024, he is named an RGC Senior Research Fellow for the project "Evaluation, Exploration, and Application of Large Language Models on Code Intelligence", a fellowship that runs for 60 months. He coauthors PsychoBench, a framework of thirteen clinical psychology scales for evaluating LLMs, which is accepted as an ICLR 2024 oral.

  8. As of October 2026

    Choh-Ming Li Professor at CUHK

He is Choh-Ming Li Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He sits on the council of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences for 2024–2027.
