Michael Moor
Michael Moor is a medical AI researcher who builds models for clinical data and medical reasoning. His research includes CaML for predicting personalized effects of new interventions and Med-Flamingo, a few-shot multimodal model for medical visual question answering; CaML received a NeurIPS Spotlight in 2023. He coauthored Almanac, a retrieval-augmented language model for clinical recommendations, and ETH Zurich announced his appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor of Medical AI in D-BSSE in 2024. His training includes an MD from the University of Basel, a PhD from ETH Zurich's Machine Learning and Computational Biology Lab, and postdoctoral research at Stanford. As of October 2026, he is a tenure-track assistant professor at ETH's D-BSSE and a professor in the ETH AI Center, where his work spans medical foundation models, multimodal LLMs, language agents and retrieval-augmented generation.

Timeline
-
2023
CaML for novel interventions
In 2023, he coauthors Zero-shot causal learning, which introduces CaML for predicting personalized effects of novel interventions. NeurIPS accepts the paper as a Spotlight.
-
July 2023
Med-Flamingo for medical VQA
In July 2023, he coauthors Med-Flamingo, a multimodal few-shot learner adapted to medicine. The model supports generative visual question answering using medical images.
-
2024
Almanac for clinical recommendations
In 2024, he coauthors Almanac, an LLM framework that retrieves curated medical resources for guideline and treatment recommendations. In an evaluation across nine specialties, a clinician panel finds gains over standard LLMs in factuality, completeness, user preference and adversarial safety.

September 2024
Assistant professor of Medical AI
ETH announces his appointment as a tenure-track assistant professor of Medical AI at its Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering, with a planned start on 1 September 2024. His work develops machine-learning and AI models for biomedical problems, with an interest in generative AI and models that integrate biomedical data for clinical applications.
-
By February 2025
Medical training and Stanford postdoc
By February 2025, he holds an MD from the University of Basel and a PhD from ETH Zurich's Machine Learning and Computational Biology Lab, where Karsten Borgwardt advised him. He completes postdoctoral research in Stanford University's Computer Science Department before joining ETH Zurich.
-
October 2026
Current work at ETH Zurich
In October 2026, he is a tenure-track assistant professor of Medical AI at ETH Zurich's D-BSSE and a professor in the ETH AI Center. The Center lists his interests as medical foundation models, LLMs, multimodal LLMs, in-context learning, knowledge injection and RAG. ETH's Medical AI Lab studies language agents for diagnostic reasoning and sequential clinical decisions; ETH's autumn 2026 catalog lists his Multimodal Medical AI lecture on foundation models, agents, tool use and RAG.
