Researcher

Valentina Boeva

Valentina Boeva is a computational genomics researcher who develops machine-learning methods for cancer research. She earned a mathematics master's degree in 2003 and a doctorate in bioengineering and bioinformatics in 2007 at Lomonosov Moscow State University, then worked at Ecole Polytechnique/INRIA and Institut Curie before leading a cancer epigenetics lab at Institut Cochin. She coauthored the 2012 Control-FREEC paper on copy-number analysis from sequencing data, and she now leads ETH Zurich research that integrates machine learning with multi-omics cancer data. She joined the ETH AI Center's Core Faculty in December 2020; in March 2026, she co-leads an NCCR module on childhood cancer and her lab develops deep-learning and foundation models to predict treatment response. She is an associate professor of computational genomics at ETH Zurich after her promotion in September 2026.

Timeline

  1. 2003–2007

    Mathematics and bioinformatics degrees

She earns an M.Sc. in Mathematics at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering and Bioinformatics there in 2007.

  2. 2007–2010

    Postdoctoral research in France

She works as a postdoctoral researcher at Ecole Polytechnique/INRIA in 2007–2008 and at the Curie Institute in 2008–2010.

  3. 2011–2016

    Control-FREEC for sequencing

At the Curie Institute, she works as a research scientist from 2011 to 2016 and coauthors the 2012 Control-FREEC paper on assessing copy number and allelic content from next-generation sequencing data.

  4. 2016–2019

    Cancer epigenetics at Cochin

From 2016 to 2019, she leads the Computational Epigenetics of Cancer laboratory at Inserm's Cochin Institute in Paris.

  5. Since June 2019

    Computational cancer genomics

Since June 2019, she leads the Computational Cancer Genomics Group at ETH Zurich and develops statistical and machine-learning methods for multi-omics cancer research. Her team uses machine learning to study how chromatin changes contribute to cancer initiation and progression.

  6. December 2020

    ETH AI Center faculty

In December 2020, she joins the ETH AI Center as a Core Faculty member.

  7. March 2026

    Foundation models for childhood cancer

In March 2026, she co-leads a research module in the NCCR “Children & Cancer”. Her lab develops and applies deep-learning and foundation models trained on cancer datasets to predict how cancer cells respond to treatment.

  8. September 2026

    Associate Professor of Computational Genomics

In September 2026, ETH Zurich appoints her Associate Professor of Computational Genomics in its Department of Computer Science.
