Mian Wei
Mian Wei is a computer vision researcher who develops computational cameras for single-photon imaging. He coauthored coded two-bucket imaging in 2018 and shared the 2023 ICCV Marr Prize for a system that reconstructs video across more than nine orders of magnitude in time. By May 2024, he was a PhD candidate in the University of Toronto's Dynamic Graphics Projects lab; he completed his PhD there in 2025 and coauthored a CVPR method for passive 3D imaging from ambient pulsed lasers. He is a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University, where he works with Srinivasa Narasimhan and Ioannis Gkioulekas.
Timeline
-
2018
Coded two-bucket cameras
He and his University of Toronto colleagues present coded two-bucket (C2B) imaging in an oral ECCV paper in 2018. Their camera divides incoming light between two pixel buckets and processes the results into live disparity or surface-normal maps for dynamic scenes.
-
2023
An ICCV Marr Prize
At ICCV in 2023, he and Sotiris Nousias, Rahul Gulve, David B. Lindell and Kiriakos N. Kutulakos win the Marr Prize for Passive Ultra-Wideband Single-Photon Imaging. Their method captures a dynamic scene once and lets users render video across more than nine orders of magnitude in time.
-
May 2024
PhD candidacy at Toronto
In May 2024, he is a PhD candidate in the University of Toronto's Dynamic Graphics Projects (DGP) lab under Kyros Kutulakos. He has earned MSc and BSc degrees from the university.
-
2025
PhD and passive 3D imaging
He completes his University of Toronto PhD in 2025 with a dissertation titled Computational Imaging across Simultaneous Timescales. In a CVPR 2025 paper, he and his collaborators use single-photon cameras to detect and separate ambient pulsed lasers, then recover a depth map for passive imaging.
-
As of October 2026
Postdoctoral work at Carnegie Mellon
As of October 2026, he is a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University, where he works with Srinivasa Narasimhan and Ioannis Gkioulekas. His research focuses on computational imaging and cameras.
