Matteo Ruggero Ronchi

Also known as Matteo Ronchi

Matteo Ruggero Ronchi is a computer vision researcher whose work connects human pose estimation, robot perception and language models. At the University of Siena, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees while applying machine learning to image steganalysis and visual recognition. At Caltech, he completed a PhD and postdoctoral studies in Pietro Perona's Computational Vision Lab, with research on how robots perceive people and on COCO action annotations and pose estimation. In July 2025, he coauthored Apple's report on foundation language models; as of October 2026, he is affiliated with Apple and Caltech, with research interests in computer vision, large language models and machine learning.

Timeline

  1. 2007–2012

    Degrees at Siena

At the University of Siena in Italy, he earns bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science and information engineering in 2010 and 2012. Under Michelangelo Diligenti and Marco Gori, he applies machine learning to image steganalysis and unsupervised feature learning for visual recognition.

  2. 2013–2019

    PhD in Caltech's Vision Lab

He completes a computer science PhD at Caltech's Computational Vision Lab from 2013 to 2019, advised by Pietro Perona. His thesis investigates ways to help social robots interact with people by improving visual perception of humans in images and video. He also completes postdoctoral studies in the lab.

  3. 2014

    Distance from portraits

He coauthors an ECCV 2014 paper with Xavier P. Burgos-Artizzu and Pietro Perona on automatically estimating distance to an unknown person from a frontal portrait without camera calibration.

  4. 2015

    COCO-a action annotations

With Pietro Perona, he introduces COCO-a in 2015: a set of annotations for 140 common visual actions in MS COCO images, with subjects, objects and verbs.

  5. 2016

    Movemes from still poses

At IEEE ICDM in 2016, he, Joon Sik Kim and Yisong Yue present a rotation-invariant latent factor model that discovers 3D basis poses, or movemes, from 2D poses in still images.

  6. 2017

    Diagnosing pose errors

At ICCV 2017, he and Pietro Perona publish a multi-instance pose-estimation benchmark that sorts errors into localization, scoring and background classes and compares two leading methods on COCO.

  7. 2018

    Relative-depth pose estimation

At BMVC 2018, he, Oisin Mac Aodha, Robert Eng and Pietro Perona present a 3D pose estimator trained with relative depth estimates gathered from crowd annotators. In September 2018, he gives the Keypoints Challenge introduction at the COCO + Mapillary Joint Recognition Challenge Workshop at ECCV.

  8. As of October 2026

    Apple foundation models

In July 2025, he coauthors Apple Intelligence Foundation Language Models: Tech Report 2025, which describes a roughly 3-billion-parameter on-device model optimized for Apple silicon and a server model based on a Parallel-Track Mixture-of-Experts transformer. As of October 2026, he is affiliated with Apple and Caltech, with research interests in computer vision, large language models and machine learning.
