Marten Wegkamp
Marten Wegkamp is a statistician whose work includes statistical learning theory and machine learning. He earned a mathematics PhD at Leiden University in 1996 and joined Cornell's faculty in 2011. His papers develop adaptive rank estimation and prediction bounds for latent-factor regression. He contributed theory to the 2024 SLIDE study, a statistical machine-learning method for finding disease factors, and coauthored a multiclass regression framework that was revised in April 2026. As of October 2026, he is a professor of statistics and data science at Cornell.

Adaptive rank estimation
With Xin Bing, he publishes a 2019 Annals of Statistics paper on adaptive rank estimation for high-dimensional multivariate response regression.
-
2021
Prediction under latent factors
He coauthors a Journal of Machine Learning Research paper with Xin Bing, Florentina Bunea and Seth Strimas-Mackey. It establishes finite-sample prediction risk bounds for principal component regression under a latent-factor model.
-
February 2024
Theory behind the SLIDE method
The SLIDE study draws on theoretical work by Wegkamp and other coauthors. The statistical machine-learning method finds previously unknown factors behind disease in complex biological data.
-
February 2024–April 2026
A regression lens on classification
In February 2024, he coauthors a preprint with Xin Bing and Bingqing Li that presents a regression framework that links linear discriminant analysis with multivariate response regression. It supports structured, regularized and nonparametric methods and gives bounds on excess misclassification risk. The paper is revised in April 2026.
