Marina Meilă
Marina Meilă is a machine-learning researcher whose work develops mathematical tools for clustering and graph segmentation. She earned an M.S. in electrical engineering in Bucharest and a Ph.D. at MIT, then coauthored a random-walk framework for spectral segmentation and developed a method to test clustering quality. Her career includes appointments at the Bucharest Research Institute for Computer Technology, the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute and the University of Washington; she co-chaired ICML’s program in 2020. Since July 2025, she has been a full professor at Waterloo and an Affiliate Professor at Washington; she holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair and a Canada CIFAR AI Chair with Vector.

Timeline
-
1985–1999
Bucharest and MIT degrees
She earns an M.S. in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest in 1985 and a Ph.D. in computer science and electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999.
-
2001
Random walks for segmentation
In 2001, she and Jianbo Shi interpret pairwise similarities as edge flows in a Markov random walk. They show that this gives spectral clustering a probabilistic foundation and characterizes when Normalized Cut is exact.
-
2018
Guarantees for clustering
In 2018, she introduces the Sublevel Set method, which uses convex relaxations to establish near-optimality and uniqueness for a clustering. The method provides distribution-free guarantees for K-means on realistic datasets.
-
2020
Co-chairing ICML
In 2020, she co-chairs the International Conference on Machine Learning’s program with Tong Zhang.
-
By 2025
Earlier academic appointments
Her earlier appointments include the Bucharest Research Institute for Computer Technology, the Polytechnic University of Bucharest and the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon. Before she joins Waterloo in July 2025, she is a Full Professor of Statistics at the University of Washington.
-
July 2025
Joining Waterloo
In July 2025, she joins the Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo as a Full Professor.
-
May 2026
Reliable Structure Discovery chair
In May 2026, she is appointed Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Reliable Structure Discovery.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at Waterloo
As of October 2026, she is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo and Affiliate Professor of Statistics at the University of Washington. She holds a faculty position at the Vector Institute for AI and a Canada CIFAR Chair in AI. Her research builds and validates tools that help computers find genuine patterns in complex data.
