Marco Laumanns
Marco Laumanns is a researcher whose work connects search algorithms with transport optimization. He coauthored PISA in 2003 and later published work on railway timetabling and public-transport routing with IBM Research. As of October 2026, he is Head of Product Engineering at ZF Digital Solutions.

Timeline
-
2003
PISA interface for search algorithms
In 2003, he coauthors PISA with Stefan Bleuler, Lothar Thiele, and Eckart Zitzler. PISA provides a platform- and programming-language-independent interface for search algorithms.
-
2013
Hierarchical railway timetabling
In 2013, he coauthors an iterative method that uses train hierarchies to solve large periodic railway timetabling problems. It adds train groups in steps while holding earlier groups fixed within specified time intervals.
-
2014
Shortest path with alternatives
In 2014, he coauthors the Shortest Path with Alternatives policy for public-transport journeys. It gives travelers a list of transport options at each stop, from which they choose while waiting.
-
2018
Periodic railway timetable planning
In 2018, he coauthors a periodic railway timetabling method that speeds automatic planning by solving a sequence of smaller subproblems.

As of October 2026
Head of Product Engineering
As of October 2026, he is Head of Product Engineering at ZF Digital Solutions. ZF’s SCALAR is a next-generation fleet management platform.
