Researcher

Man Hon Wong

Man Hon Wong is a computer scientist at The Chinese University of Hong Kong whose work on databases and distributed systems sits beside research interests in expert systems and applications of fuzzy logic. He earned a B.Sc. in 1987 and an M.Phil. in 1989 at CUHK and a Ph.D. at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1993, then joined CUHK as an assistant professor and became an associate professor in 1998. His papers include a 1992 PODS paper on bounded inconsistency and concurrency, a 1995 article on context-specific synchronization written with Divyakant Agrawal, a 1999 PODS paper on time-series searching with Kelvin Kam Wing Chu, and a 2000 paper on diamond quorum consensus for replicated databases. He is an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at CUHK, where his research areas include artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, and databases, data mining and knowledge management.

Timeline

  1. 1987–1993

    Degrees at CUHK and UCSB

He receives a B.Sc. in 1987 and an M.Phil. in 1989 from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He then goes to the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he earns his Ph.D. in 1993.

  2. 1992

    Bounded inconsistency at PODS

While at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he publishes "Tolerating Bounded Inconsistency for Increasing Concurrency in Database Systems" at PODS in 1992.

  3. 1993–1998

    Joining the CUHK faculty

He joins The Chinese University of Hong Kong as an assistant professor in August 1993. The university promotes him to associate professor in 1998.

  4. 1995

    Context-specific synchronization

In 1995, he and Divyakant Agrawal publish "Context-specific synchronization for atomic data types in object-based databases" in volume 149 of Theoretical Computer Science. The article comes from the Department of Computer Science at CUHK.

  5. 1999

    Fast time-series searching

With Kelvin Kam Wing Chu, he publishes "Fast Time-Series Searching with Scaling and Shifting" at PODS in 1999. The paper gives a geometric formulation for finding the optimal scale and offset between sequences and uses it in a tree-based index for similarity search, tested on stock-price traces.

  6. October 2000

    Diamond quorum consensus

In October 2000, he, Ada Wai-Chee Fu and Yat Sheung Wong publish "Diamond Quorum Consensus for High Capacity and Efficiency in a Replicated Database System" in Distributed and Parallel Databases.

  7. As of October 2026

    Adjunct associate professor at CUHK

He is an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at CUHK, which he joined in 1993. His research areas there include artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, and databases, data mining and knowledge management, and his research interests include transaction management, mobile databases, data replication, distributed systems, expert systems and applications of fuzzy logic.
