M. S. Ramakumar
Ramakumar is an Indian roboticist whose work applied automation and remote handling to nuclear systems. He coauthored a four-axis robot paper in 1991 and a PHWR coolant-channel telemanipulator design in 1995. In 1998, he led nuclear-component manufacture for Pokhran-II while his team developed online fuelling and coolant-channel inspection systems, and he coauthored work on dextrous-gripper force control. The Government of India awarded him the Padmashri in 1999, and he served on the advisory committee of a computer-vision conference in 2002. He headed BARC robotics when he invited an intern to learn electro-mechanical design, and by 2022 the former intern worked as a roboticist at Medtronic Surgical Robotics.
Timeline
-
1991
Four-axis nuclear robot

Nuclear components for Pokhran-II
In 1998, he directs BARC's Nuclear Fuel and Automation Manufacturing Group and leads nuclear-component manufacture for the Pokhran-II tests.
-
1998
Online reactor systems
His team develops online fuelling and coolant-channel inspection systems for power reactors for the 1998 tests.
-
1998
Dextrous-gripper force control
In 1998, he coauthors a paper on force control and slip detection using a dextrous gripper.
