Liwei Jiang
Also known as 姜力炜
Liwei Jiang is an AI safety researcher who studies machine morality and the sameness of language-model outputs, and whose Artificial Hivemind paper won a NeurIPS 2025 Best Paper Award. After a B.A. in computer science and mathematics at Colby College in 2019, she earned a Ph.D. at the University of Washington's Allen School under Yejin Choi, defending it in May 2026. She was first author of the Delphi paper, published in Nature Machine Intelligence in 2025, and led Artificial Hivemind, whose Infinity-Chat benchmark showed that more than 70 language models give similar answers to open-ended questions. Since April 2026, she is a Research Scientist at NVIDIA and an incoming assistant professor of computer science at the University of California, Irvine.

Timeline
-
2015–2019
A Colby College degree
She studies computer science and mathematics at Colby College from 2015 to 2019 and graduates with a B.A., summa cum laude.
-
September 2019
PhD under Yejin Choi
In September 2019, she begins a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington's Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, advised by Yejin Choi.
-
June 2020–December 2024
Researcher at Ai2
From June 2020 to December 2024, she works as a graduate student researcher at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Ai2), on the Mosaic and AllenNLP teams.
-
2021–2025
Delphi and machine morality
In October 2021, she is first author of “Can Machines Learn Morality? The Delphi Experiment,” which introduces Delphi, an experimental framework of deep neural networks trained to reason about descriptive ethical judgments. In January 2025, the journal version appears in Nature Machine Intelligence as “Investigating machine moral judgement through the Delphi experiment,” describing Delphi as an open-source AI system trained to predict the moral judgements of US participants.
-
2022
NeuroLogic A*esque decoding
She coauthors “NeuroLogic A*esque Decoding: Constrained Text Generation with Lookahead Heuristics” with Ximing Lu, Sean Welleck, Yejin Choi and others. The decoding algorithm adds heuristic estimates of future cost to constrained text generation, and the paper receives the Best new method paper award at NAACL 2022.
-
March 2025–March 2026
Guardrails research at NVIDIA
In March 2025, she joins the NeMo Guardrails team at NVIDIA as a graduate student researcher, a role she holds until March 2026.
-
December 2025
A NeurIPS Best Paper Award
In December 2025, “Artificial Hivemind: The Open-Ended Homogeneity of Language Models (and Beyond),” a paper she leads, receives a Best Paper Award at NeurIPS 2025. Its Infinity-Chat benchmark pairs 26,000 real-world open-ended queries with more than 31,000 human preference annotations, and tests of more than 70 language models show similar outputs across models.
-
Since April 2026
Research Scientist at NVIDIA
In April 2026, she joins NVIDIA as a Research Scientist, and in May 2026, she defends her Ph.D. on Humanistic, Pluralistic, and Coevolutionary AI Safety and Alignment. Her work covers moral and pluralistic value reasoning in language models. She is also an incoming assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine.
