Leonid Perlovsky
Leonid Perlovsky is an affiliated research professor at Northeastern University who studies cognitive algorithms and mathematical models of the mind. After professorships at Novosibirsk State University and New York University, he served as chief scientist at Nichols Research from 1985 to 1999, leading corporate research in intelligent systems and neural networks. At the Air Force Research Laboratory he developed neural modeling fields, a machine-learning framework that joins neural networks, fuzzy logic and model-based recognition, and Oxford University Press published his book Neural Networks and Intellect in 2001. He founded the Elsevier journal Physics of Life Reviews, and in 2007 he won the International Neural Network Society's Gabor Award and the US Air Force's McLucas Award. His 2017 book Music, Passion, and Cognitive Function links music to the evolution of consciousness and culture.

Timeline
-
By 1985
Professor at Novosibirsk and NYU
Before he joins Nichols Research in 1985, he serves as a professor at Novosibirsk State University and at New York University.
-
1985–1999
Chief scientist at Nichols Research
From 1985 to 1999, he is chief scientist at Nichols Research, a high-tech US defense contractor. There he leads corporate research in intelligent systems, neural networks, sensor fusion and data mining.
-
2001
Neural modeling fields at AFRL
Oxford University Press publishes his book Neural Networks and Intellect in 2001. At the Air Force Research Laboratory, he develops neural modeling fields, a machine-learning framework that combines neural networks, fuzzy logic and model-based recognition and also serves as a mathematical description of the mind. Its dynamic logic handles the combinatorial complexity of matching signals to models.
-
2004
Founding Physics of Life Reviews
He founds Physics of Life Reviews, a quarterly Elsevier journal established in 2004, and serves as its editor-in-chief.
-
2005–2007
Gabor and McLucas awards
He receives the IEEE Boston Section's Distinguished Member Award in 2005. In 2007, he wins the International Neural Network Society's Gabor Award, the Air Force Research Laboratory's Charles E. Ryan Memorial Award and the McLucas Award, the top scientific award of the US Air Force.
-
2006–2009
Neurodynamics with Robert Kozma
With Robert Kozma, he organizes a special track on the neurodynamics of higher-level cognitive behavior at the 2006 IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence in Vancouver. The two co-edit a Springer volume on neurodynamics, cognition and consciousness in 2007, and he serves as program co-chair of the 2009 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks.
-
2016–2017
Professor in St. Petersburg
In 2016, he is appointed professor at St. Petersburg Peter the Great Polytechnic University. His book Music, Passion, and Cognitive Function appears in February 2017 and links music to the evolution of consciousness and culture. In July 2017, he is a visiting scholar at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a principal research physicist at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Hanscom Air Force Base.
-
As of October 2026
Research professor at Northeastern
He is an affiliated research professor at Northeastern University, where he has held a joint professorship in the psychology and engineering departments, and a visiting scholar at Harvard University. His research covers cognitive algorithms and the evolution of languages and cultures.
