Lai Wan Chan
Also known as Laiwan Chan, Lai-Wan Chan, Lai-Wan Lauren Chan
Lai Wan Chan is an emeritus professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong whose research covers neural networks, machine learning, financial data analysis and causal inference. At Cambridge, she earned B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in the Engineering Department, worked in the Speech, Vision and Robotics Group, and coauthored a 1987 paper on an adaptive training algorithm for back-propagation networks. Co-principal investigator of a Croucher Foundation project on neural-network speech recognition and synthesis from 1991 to 1995, she co-founded the IDEAL conference series in 1998 and headed the Division of Computer Science and Engineering from 1998 to 2002. Papers from 2000 and 2001 applied independent component analysis to finance, and from 2004 to 2013 she was Associate Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Engineering. Her 2018 and 2019 papers addressed causal inference and domain generalization.
