Researcher

Krzysztof Wołk

Krzysztof Wołk is an AI researcher whose work spans speech translation, Polish-language NLP and machine learning for health. He coauthored Polish-English statistical speech-translation research for IWSLT and explored real-time translation with speech recognition and synthesis. At the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology, he earned a 2016 doctorate in technical computer science for a dissertation on speech translation with comparable corpora. His work includes a 2017 paper on automated medical article analysis for genetic diagnosis, a 2018 neural translation survey, a 2019 Polish NLP evaluation paper and a 2021 speech-based dementia study; in 2026, he coauthors a review of AI in orthopaedics. As of October 2026, he is an associate professor at the Academy’s Cathedral of Multimedia, where he leads research in natural language processing and machine learning.

Timeline

  1. 2013–2015

    Speech translation for IWSLT

With Krzysztof Marasek, he coauthors a Polish-English statistical machine translation system for the IWSLT 2013 evaluation campaign. The team uses TED parallel text to train, develop, tune and test the system. A 2015 preprint by the pair explores real-time statistical speech translation, with recognition and synthesis software in a pipeline for voice communication.

  2. 2016

    A doctorate in speech translation

He completes a doctorate in technical computer science at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in 2016. His dissertation studies statistical machine translation of speech enhanced by comparable corpora under supervisor Krzysztof Marasek.

  3. 2017

    Automated medical article analysis

In 2017, he coauthors “Automated Medical Articles Analysis for Human Genetic Diagnostic” with E. Zawadzka and K. Marasek. The paper appears in Procedia Computer Science, volume 121, pages 797–802.

  4. 2018

    Neural translation into Polish

In 2018, he and Krzysztof Marasek coauthor a survey of neural machine translation into Polish for the International Conference on Multimedia and Network Information System.

  5. 2019

    Evaluating Polish NLP tools

He coauthors “PolEval 2019 — the Next Chapter in Evaluating Natural Language Processing Tools for Polish,” a paper in the 2019 Human Language Technologies conference volume.

  6. 2021

    Dementia screening from speech

In 2021, he and Karol Chlasta use spontaneous speech from the Interspeech 2020 ADReSS challenge to classify Alzheimer’s dementia. They extract audio features with pretrained VGGish and use Scikit-learn classifiers.

  7. 2026

    AI in orthopaedics

In 2026, he coauthors a review of AI in orthopaedics and musculoskeletal care. The review covers diagnostic imaging, surgical planning, risk prediction, rehabilitation and digital health ecosystems.

  8. As of October 2026

    Associate professor at PJAIT

As of October 2026, he is an associate professor at the Cathedral of Multimedia at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology. He leads research in natural language processing and machine learning based on statistical methods and neural networks.
