Researcher

Konda Reddy Mopuri

Konda Reddy Mopuri is a computer vision researcher whose work covers universal adversarial perturbations, data-free knowledge distillation and dataset condensation. He did his PhD from 2012 to 2018 at the Vision and AI Lab of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, and his thesis won the IUPRAI Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2019. As a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh from 2018 to 2020, he coauthored Dataset Condensation with Gradient Matching with Bo Zhao and Hakan Bilen, published at ICLR 2021. IIT Hyderabad gave him its Faculty Research Excellence Award (Below 40 Years Age Group) in April 2026. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at IIT Hyderabad, where he leads the Data-Driven Intelligence & Learning Laboratory.

Timeline

  1. 2012–2018

    A PhD at IISc

He does his PhD from 2012 to 2018 at the Vision and AI Lab of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.

  2. 2017

    Fast Feature Fool at BMVC

With Utsav Garg and R. Venkatesh Babu, he presents Fast Feature Fool at BMVC 2017. The method generates universal adversarial perturbations for object-recognition CNNs without access to their training data.

  3. 2018–2020

    Postdoc at Edinburgh

He works as a postdoc from 2018 to 2020 in the Visual Computing Group at the University of Edinburgh.

  4. 2019

    Zero-shot knowledge distillation

In 2019, he coauthors Zero-Shot Knowledge Distillation in Deep Networks with Gaurav Kumar Nayak, Vaisakh Shaj, R. Venkatesh Babu and Anirban Chakraborty, accepted at ICML 2019. The method trains a small student model from a teacher by synthesizing data impressions in place of the original training data.

  5. 2019–2020

    Two dissertation awards

His PhD thesis wins the IUPRAI Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2019 and the SPCOM Best Dissertation Award in 2020.

  6. 2021

    Dataset condensation at ICLR

He coauthors Dataset Condensation with Gradient Matching with Bo Zhao and Hakan Bilen, published at ICLR 2021. The method condenses a large dataset into a small set of synthetic samples for training deep neural networks from scratch.

  7. April 2026

    A faculty research award

In April 2026, he receives the Faculty Research Excellence Award (Below 40 Years Age Group) for 2026 from IIT Hyderabad.

  8. As of October 2026

    Lab lead at IIT Hyderabad

He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at IIT Hyderabad, where he leads the Data-Driven Intelligence & Learning Laboratory (DiL). He serves as Area Chair at NeurIPS 2026, and his research interests are computer vision and artificial intelligence.
