Researcher

Konrad Schindler

Konrad Schindler is a researcher in computer vision, photogrammetry, and remote sensing whose work connects Earth observation with visual AI. He earned degrees in photogrammetry and computer science in Vienna and Graz, then held research and faculty roles at Graz, Monash, TU Darmstadt, and ETH Zurich. His papers presented a stereo-camera system for pedestrian detection and tracking and Marigold, a diffusion-based method for monocular depth estimation. He led an ISPRS technical commission from 2012 to 2016, received the 2020 ISPRS Doyle Award, and became an IEEE Fellow in 2026. As of October 2026, he directs the Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing lab and heads ETH Zurich's Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry.

Timeline

  1. 1999–2003

    Photogrammetry and computer science

He earns a Diplomingenieur degree in photogrammetry from Vienna University of Technology in 1999 and completes a PhD in computer science at Graz University of Technology in 2003.

  2. 2009–2016

    From Darmstadt to ETH

His research spans computer vision, photogrammetry, and remote sensing, and connects Earth observation with visual AI. After research posts at Graz, Monash, and ETH Zurich, he becomes assistant professor of image understanding at TU Darmstadt in 2009, joins ETH Zurich as professor in 2010, and becomes an ordinary professor of photogrammetry and remote sensing in 2016.

  3. 2010–2012

    A pedestrian tracking system

In 2010, he co-authors “Automatic detection and tracking of pedestrians from a moving stereo rig” with Andreas Ess, Bastian Leibe, and Luc Van Gool. The paper presents a system that detects and tracks pedestrians from moving vehicles and wins the U.V. Helava Award in 2012 for the best ISPRS Journal paper from 2008 to 2011.

  4. 2012–2016

    Leading an ISPRS commission

He serves as president of ISPRS Technical Commission III, Photogrammetric Computer Vision and Image Analysis, from 2012 to 2016.

  5. 2020

    The Frederick J. Doyle Award

He receives the 2020 ISPRS Frederick J. Doyle Award.

  6. 2024

    Repurposing diffusion for depth

In 2024, he co-authors “Repurposing Diffusion-Based Image Generators for Monocular Depth Estimation” for CVPR. The paper introduces Marigold, an affine-invariant method for monocular depth estimation derived from Stable Diffusion.

  7. 2026

    IEEE Fellowship

He becomes an IEEE Fellow in January 2026 for contributions to computer vision and artificial intelligence in photogrammetry and remote sensing.

  8. As of October 2026

    Head of ETH Zurich's institute

As of October 2026, he directs the Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing lab and serves as head of the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry at ETH Zurich.
