Kevin Jamieson
Kevin Jamieson is a University of Washington computer scientist whose work develops adaptive methods for machine learning. He earned a B.S. at the University of Washington in 2009, studied in UW–Madison’s WID Optimization research group in 2013, and completed a Ph.D. there in 2015 under Robert Nowak. With Ameet Talwalkar, he published a 2016 AISTATS paper on non-stochastic best-arm identification, whose method sped hyperparameter search by allocating resources to promising settings. After a Berkeley postdoc, he joined UW faculty in 2017 and coauthored Hyperband in 2018; by 2023, his NSF CAREER project explored closed-loop data collection. In 2026, AISTATS gave him and Talwalkar its Test of Time Award, and as of October 2026 he is an associate professor in UW’s Allen School.

Timeline
-
2009–2015
UW and Wisconsin degrees
He earns a B.S. at the University of Washington in 2009 under Maya Gupta. In 2013, he is a graduate student in the UW–Madison College of Engineering and WID’s Optimization research group. He completes a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2015 under Robert Nowak.
-
2016
Non-stochastic best-arm identification
With Ameet Talwalkar, he publishes “Non-stochastic Best Arm Identification and Hyperparameter Optimization” at AISTATS in 2016. Their method allocates more resources to promising settings and reaches comparable test accuracies an order of magnitude faster than baseline methods.
-
2017
Joining the Allen School
After a postdoc at UC Berkeley, he joins the University of Washington in 2017 as Guestrin Endowed Professor in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning.
-
2018
Hyperband in JMLR
With Lisha Li, Giulia DeSalvo, Afshin Rostamizadeh, and Ameet Talwalkar, he publishes Hyperband in the Journal of Machine Learning Research in 2018. It speeds random search through adaptive resource allocation and early stopping.
-
By 2023
A closed-loop CAREER project
By 2023, his NSF CAREER project, “Non-asymptotic, instance-optimal closed-loop learning,” explores reliable data-collection strategies for closed-loop learning.
-
2026
AISTATS Test of Time Award
In 2026, AISTATS gives him and Ameet Talwalkar its Test of Time Award for “Non-stochastic Best Arm Identification and Hyperparameter Optimization.”
-
As of October 2026
Associate professor at UW
As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. In Winter 2026, he teaches CSE 541 Interactive Machine Learning.
