Researcher

Gitakrishnan Ramadurai

Gitakrishnan Ramadurai is a transportation researcher whose work applies computer vision and deep learning to traffic systems. He pursued a PhD at RPI from 2005 to 2009, writing a dissertation on dynamic user-equilibrium models, multi-dimensional choice and an efficient algorithm; he received the ITS World Congress Second Paper Award in 2008 and the INFORMS TSL Society Best Transportation Science Dissertation Award in 2009. His research includes a 2015 study of contagion on Indian urban bus networks, a 2018 paper on deep-learning vehicle detection with limited heterogeneous traffic data, and an IMPRINT project on connected intermediate public transport from 2019 to 2022. In 2022, he coauthored a CVPR Workshops paper on edge-device vehicle counting that uses ensemble knowledge distillation to improve tiny vehicle detectors. As of October 2026, he is a professor at IIT Madras’s Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence; he gave an “AI in Transportation” guest lecture at Thiagarajar College of Engineering in the 2025–2026 academic year.

Timeline

  3. 2009

    An INFORMS dissertation award

In 2009, he wins the INFORMS TSL Society Best Transportation Science Dissertation Award.

  4. 2015

    Contagion in urban bus networks

In 2015, he coauthors an arXiv paper on contagion processes in urban bus networks across Indian cities with Atanu Chatterjee and Krishna Jagannathan.

  5. 2018

    Deep learning for vehicle detection

In 2018, he coauthors a paper on training a deep-learning architecture to detect vehicles in limited heterogeneous traffic data.

  6. 2019–2022

    A connected transit project
