Also known as 刘康

Kang Liu is a professor of natural language processing at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, whose work covers information extraction, knowledge graphs and large language models. After studying at Xidian University, he earned a PhD in computer science at the institute in 2010, advised by Jun Zhao. He coauthored "Relation Classification via Convolutional Deep Neural Network", one of two papers to win a best paper award at COLING 2014, and in 2015 he coauthored "Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks for Text Classification" at AAAI. He won the 2018 Qian Weichang first prize, led a Google Focused Research Award project in 2015 and 2016, and coauthored the 2022 book Knowledge Graph: Algorithms and Practice. He is also an associate editor of Pattern Recognition and a professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Timeline

  1. 1998–2010

Xidian University and a CASIA PhD

He studies electronic engineering at Xidian University from 1998. In 2005, he earns a master's degree in pattern recognition there, supervised by Licheng Jiao, and works as a senior software R&D engineer at Tsinghua Tongfang until 2006. In 2010, he earns a PhD in computer science at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, advised by Jun Zhao.

  2. 2010–2014

    COLING 2014 best paper award

From September 2010 to December 2010, he is a visiting scholar in Baidu's NLP group, working with Haifeng Wang. From 2010, he works at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, first as an assistant researcher and then as an associate researcher. In 2014, he coauthors "Relation Classification via Convolutional Deep Neural Network" at COLING with Daojian Zeng, Siwei Lai, Guangyou Zhou and Jun Zhao, and the paper wins one of the conference's two best paper awards.

  3. 2015–2016

    Recurrent convolutional text classification

In 2015, he coauthors "Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks for Text Classification" at AAAI with Siwei Lai, Liheng Xu and Jun Zhao; the model combines a recurrent structure with a max-pooling layer to classify text without human-designed features. Also in 2015, he coauthors "Knowledge Graph Embedding via Dynamic Mapping Matrix" at ACL-IJCNLP with Guoliang Ji, Shizhu He, Liheng Xu and Jun Zhao. As principal investigator, he leads a Google Focused Research Award project on representing and reasoning knowledge by jointly learning on knowledge graphs, textual triples and unstructured texts, from 2015 to 2016.

  4. 2017–2022

    Society and conference leadership

From 2017, he is general secretary of the Special Group of Language and Knowledge Computing of the Chinese Information Processing Society of China, and from 2018 to 2020 he chairs its Youth Working Committee. He is program committee chair of CCKS 2020 and CCL 2021 and general chair of CCKS 2022.

  5. 2018–2020

    Prizes and young-scholar honours

In 2018, he wins first prize in the Qian Weichang Chinese Information Processing Science and Technology Award, ranked second among its winners, and in 2019 he wins first prize in the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award. In 2019, he also receives support from the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, and in 2020 the Chinese Academy of Sciences Youth Innovation Promotion Association names him an outstanding member.

  6. 2022–2023

    A book on knowledge graphs

In 2022, he coauthors the book Knowledge Graph: Algorithms and Practice (知识图谱—算法与实践), published by Higher Education Press, with Jun Zhao, Shizhu He, Yubo Chen and Yuanzhe Zhang. In 2023, he coauthors "Joint Entity and Relation Extraction with Set Prediction Networks" in IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems with Dianbo Sui, Yubo Chen, Jun Zhao, Xiangrong Zeng and Shengping Liu.

  7. As of October 2026

    Professor at CASIA and UCAS

He is a professor at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, working in its Laboratory of Cognition and Decision of Complex Systems, and holds a professorship at the School of Artificial Intelligence of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is a Youth Scientist of the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence and an associate editor of Pattern Recognition. His research covers natural language processing, knowledge engineering and large language models.
