Researcher

Jun Zhou

Jun Zhou is a professor at Griffith University in Australia who applies hyperspectral imaging to computer vision, including object tracking in hyperspectral video. After studying computer science in China and Canada, he earned a PhD at the University of Alberta in 2006 and worked at the Australian National University and NICTA in Canberra before joining Griffith in June 2012. He won an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award in 2012, and in 2024 the Council funded a $523,425 Discovery Project that he leads with Kuldip Paliwal. With Paliwal and others, he coauthored the Hy-Tracker framework in 2023, gave a keynote on hyperspectral object tracking at a 2025 workshop held with IJCAI in Montreal, and coauthored a May 2026 paper that links spectral unmixing to target localization.

Timeline

  1. 1996–2006

From Nanjing to an Alberta PhD

He earns a B.S. in computer science in 1996 and a B.E. in international business in 1998, both from Nanjing University of Science and Technology. He completes an M.S. in computer science at Concordia University in 2002 and a Ph.D. at the University of Alberta in 2006.

  2. 2012

    Joining Griffith University

Having been a research fellow in the Research School of Computer Science at the Australian National University and a researcher at NICTA's Canberra Research Laboratory, he joins the School of Information and Communication Technology at Griffith University in June 2012. He wins an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award in 2012, works at Griffith as a lecturer and ARC DECRA Fellow, and is also an adjunct visiting fellow at ANU's Research School of Computer Science.

  3. 2023

    Hy-Tracker for hyperspectral video

He coauthors Hy-Tracker in 2023 with Mohammad Aminul Islam, Wangzhi Xing, Yongsheng Gao and Kuldip K. Paliwal. The framework uses YOLOv7 to detect objects in hyperspectral videos, refines the detections with a tracking module, and adds a Kalman filter to handle scale variation and occlusion.

  4. By 2024

    Professor and society president

By 2024, he is a professor in the School of Information and Communication Technology at Griffith University, president of the Australian Pattern Recognition Society, and an associate editor of five international journals, including IEEE TGRS and Pattern Recognition. His papers have drawn more than 10,000 citations. His research covers pattern recognition, hyperspectral imaging and computer vision, with applications in remote sensing, environment, agriculture and medicine.

  5. November 2024

    ARC grant for hyperspectral tracking

In November 2024, Griffith announces that the Australian Research Council has funded the Discovery Project "Spectral-spatial-temporal object tracking in hyperspectral videos", led by him and Kuldip Paliwal and valued at $523,425.

  6. August 2025

    Keynote on hyperspectral tracking

In August 2025, he gives the keynote "Spectral-spatial-temporal Modelling for Hyperspectral Object Tracking" at the 4th International Workshop on Spatio-Temporal Reasoning and Learning, held with IJCAI 2025 in Montreal.

  7. May 2026

    Unmixing with material prompts

In May 2026, he coauthors "End-to-End Unmixing with Material Prompts for Hyperspectral Object Tracking" with Kuldip K. Paliwal, Xu Han, Mohammad Aminul Islam, Lei Wang and others. The paper treats hyperspectral object tracking as a joint optimization of material decomposition and target localization, tied together by a weighted target-oriented unmixing loss.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Griffith University

He is a professor at Griffith University. With Yongsheng Gao and Piotr Koniusz, he is a postdoctoral advisor to research fellow Lei Wang in the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub, where Wang has worked since February 2025.
