Juan Eugenio Iglesias

Juan Eugenio Iglesias is a medical imaging researcher who develops machine learning methods for brain MRI. He earned M.Sc. degrees in telecommunications and electrical engineering at Seville and KTH, completed a biomedical engineering PhD at UCLA, and held postdoctoral roles at the Martinos Center and BCBL. While at BCBL, he received an ERC Starting Grant in 2015 for a planned project to develop tools for high-resolution neuroimaging, then joined UCL in 2016 and returned to Martinos in 2019. His work includes SynthSR and SynthSeg for MRI synthesis and segmentation, and NextBrain, a histological atlas for MRI segmentation. As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor of Radiology at the Martinos Center, directs LEMoN and co-directs the Center for Machine Learning, with current AI work on portable low-field MRI.

Timeline

  1. August 2011–April 2016

    Postdocs and an ERC grant

He earns M.Sc. degrees in telecommunications and electrical engineering at the University of Seville and KTH, then completes a biomedical engineering PhD at UCLA. His PhD study at UCLA runs from September 2007 to June 2011. He works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Martinos Center from August 2011 to March 2014 and at BCBL from April 2014 to April 2016. While working as a biomedical engineer at BCBL in 2015, he receives an ERC Starting Grant for a project that aims to develop computational tools for high-resolution neuroimaging.

  2. September 2016–February 2022

    ERC research fellowship at UCL

In September 2016, he begins an ERC Senior Research Fellowship at UCL's Centre for Medical Image Computing, which continues through February 2022.

  3. 2019

    Return to the Martinos Center

He moves back to the Martinos Center in Boston in 2019.

  4. 2020

    SynthSR for clinical MRI

In 2020, he coauthors SynthSR, a method that trains a CNN to turn thick-slice clinical MRI scans with varied contrast, resolution and orientation into 1 mm isotropic MP-RAGE volumes.

  5. 2021

    SynthSeg for brain MRI

In 2021, he coauthors SynthSeg, a CNN trained on synthetic data that segments brain scans across contrasts and resolutions without retraining.

  6. 2025

    The NextBrain atlas

In 2025, he coauthors NextBrain, a probabilistic histological atlas for MRI segmentation. The team aligns roughly 10,000 histological sections from five whole-brain hemispheres and produces segmentations for 333 regions.

  7. October 2026

    AI for portable low-field MRI

In October 2026, he is listed to present generalizable neural networks that analyze clinical brain scans with varied resolutions and imaging characteristics, with applications extending to portable MRI. His team is developing AI tools for low-field portable MRI.

  8. As of October 2026

    Radiology professor and lab director

As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at MGH. He has held the associate professorship since 2023. He directs the Laboratory for Ex vivo Modeling of Neuroanatomy (LEMoN) and co-directs the Center for Machine Learning. He has held a research affiliate appointment at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory since November 2018. He also holds an Honorary Research Fellow role at UCL.
