Berkin Bilgic
Berkin Bilgic is a radiology researcher who uses machine learning to improve MRI acquisition and image reconstruction. He studied electrical engineering and physics at Bogazici University, then earned master's and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. At MGH and Harvard, he advanced from research fellow to faculty and coauthored machine-learning methods for accelerated MRI, including SubZero for T1 and T2 mapping. Since November 2023, he is an associate professor of radiology at MGH and Harvard Medical School and heads the BRAIN lab at the Martinos Center.

Timeline
-
2008
Degrees at Bogazici
He earns B.S. degrees in electrical and electronics engineering and physics at Bogazici University in 2008.
-
2010–2013
MIT degrees and MRI thesis
He earns an S.M. in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT in 2010 and completes his PhD in 2013. His dissertation proposes MRI reconstruction algorithms to reduce imaging time and mitigate image artifacts.
-
2013–2019
Radiology at MGH and Harvard
He joins MGH/Harvard Radiology as a research fellow in 2013, becomes an instructor in 2016, and becomes an assistant professor in 2019.
-
2018–2019
Learning for accelerated EPI
In 2018, he coauthors a paper that combines machine learning and physics-based reconstruction for accelerated multishot EPI. Its 2019 revision describes whole-brain parameter maps derived from an 8.3-second acquisition.
-
2023
SubZero for MRI mapping
In 2023, he coauthors SubZero, a zero-shot self-supervised MRI reconstruction method that uses a parallel network and attention to improve T1 and T2 mapping.
-
Since November 2023
Professor at the Martinos Center
Since November 2023, he is an associate professor of radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and heads the BRAIN lab at the Martinos Center. His research focuses on MRI data acquisition and reconstruction, including self-supervised machine learning and quantitative parameter mapping.
