John Miller

Also known as John C. Miller

John Miller is an entrepreneur whose companies use artificial intelligence in restaurant kitchens and biometrics in payment systems. He earned a JD at Stanford Law School, served as Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals' vice president of intellectual property from 2004 to 2010, and founded Cali Group in 2011. In 2016, he founded PopID with technology and business leaders; in 2018, Miso Robotics' Flippy used AI software, temperature sensors and computer vision at CaliBurger. At a Pasadena CaliBurger, Cali Group announced fever checks, face payments and AI kitchen robots in March 2020; in December 2023, it announced CaliExpress by Flippy with Miso Robotics and PopID, a planned restaurant with automated ordering and cooking. PopID announced equity financing for a global biometric network in June 2025, and as of October 2026 Miller is its CEO.

    Face payments and kitchen AI

    In March 2020, Cali Group announces plans to deploy fever checks, face-based payments and Miso's AI-driven kitchen robots at a Pasadena CaliBurger. Miller describes the systems as new tools for restaurant and retail businesses during the COVID-19 crisis.

  6. December 2023

    CaliExpress by Flippy

    In December 2023, Cali Group, Miso Robotics and PopID announce plans for CaliExpress by Flippy, a fully autonomous restaurant. Miller describes it as a restaurant where ordering and every cooking process are fully automated.

  7. June 2025

    PopID equity financing

    In June 2025, PopID announces an equity financing that includes Verifone, PayPal, Commerce Ventures, Chipotle's Cultivate Next Fund and Visa Ventures. Miller says the capital will help build an open-loop global biometric network.
